Hans von Oettingen was the son of the gynecologist Karljohann von Oettingen . Hans von Oettingen completed an apprenticeship as a colonial farmer and studied at the University of Marburg . He took the soldier as a Wehrmacht on World War II in part. In 1944 he was arrested on charges of having " armed resistance against state power ". In 1945, he was six years prison sentenced. Oettingen was able to escape from custody (which earned him a death sentence in absentia ) and fell into American captivity , from which he was released in 1946.

In the first post-war years, Hans von Oettingen worked as a journalist and publisher in Frankfurt am Main ; from 1950 he ran an advertising agency there . He later worked as a management consultant in France and Switzerland . In November 1964 he was arrested in Zurich for espionage for the GDR and in February 1966 sentenced to 27 months in prison by a Zurich court. In May 1966, Oettingen's early release from prison took place in exchange for the departure of a group of Swiss citizens from the GDR. Hans von Oettingen moved to the GDR and lived as a freelance writer in East Berlin until his death . His grave is in the Dorotheenstädtischer Friedhof in Berlin.

Hans von Oettingen's literary works have been published by GDR publishers since 1956. Oettingen was the author of novels , short stories , television scripts and radio plays . Most of his works are ideologically tinged war, adventure and crime stories , some of which were published in high editions by the GDR military publishing house.
