Harald Funk

Harald Franz Funk (born September 20, 1918 in Herzogenburg ; † January 1, 1992 ) was an Austrian chemist .

Life

Harald Franz Funk, son of Franz Anton Funk and Anna Maria geb. Seifried, studied chemical engineering from 1940 to 1944 in Karlsruhe . From 1940 to 1946 he worked as a research engineer at BASF in Ludwigshafen . He then worked as a chemical engineer in an advisory capacity until 1951, and from 1952 to 1956 at Gulf Oil in Canada . He was then responsible for North America at Linde AG until 1962 . From 1962 to 1965 he was a cryogenics manager at Allied Chemical Corp. From 1962 to 1965 he was President at Silvichem Corp. in Toronto and Salzburg . From 1988 he was Vice President at Phoenix Gold Mines Ltd. in Toronto. He also worked as a consultant for the World Bank .

Funk published numerous articles on solid waste gasification and received more than 44 patents . His achievements include the calculation and creation of steam tables and Mollier diagrams for ammonia and acetylene , the design and construction of a flue gas desulphurisation system for gasoline in oil refineries (removal of mercaptans ), the commissioning of a flue gas cleaning system , the development of a demonstration system for coke oven gas cleaning with recovery of pure hydrogen and desulphurisation , a demonstration plant for the production of activated carbon from waste wood , a plant for the recovery of C5 and C6 monomers from wood for the production of sugar ( xylitol ) and other products, and a demonstration plant for the gasification of solid waste.

He was a member of the Association of Professional Engineers in Ontario , the American Institute of Chemical Engineers , Air Pollution Control Association , Verein Deutscher Ingenieure , German Society for Chemical Apparatus and the New York Academy of Sciences .
