Harald "Harry" Gämperle (born May 11, 1968 in St. Gallen ) is a former Swiss football player and current coach .
Career
As a player
Harald Gämperle, who played at FC Bazenheid and FC Kirchberg as a junior, played at FC St. Gallen from 1986, where he attracted the attention of the Grasshopper Club Zurich with his strong performances . In 1990 he switched to the reigning champion, with whom he won four championship titles and one cup victory by 1998. In 1995 and 1996 he played with the Zurich team in the UEFA Champions League . In 1998 Gämperle signed with league competitor Neuchâtel Xamax , where he ended his active career in 2000 due to a serious injury.
Gämperle was first called up for the Swiss national team in 1989. In total he came on four missions.
As a trainer
Immediately after his playing career, Gämperle was brought on board as an assistant coach at BSC Young Boys . After a brief interlude in the Challenge League at FC Baden in 2003, Fredy Bickel , who had switched from Bern to FC Zurich , steered Gämperle to FCZ, but allegedly at the request of the then FCZ coach Lucien Favre . This extremely successful cooperation led to the cup victory in 2005 and the Swiss championship title in 2006 and 2007.
In 2007 Gämperle went to Hertha BSC together with Favre and the players Steve von Bergen and Raffael . In September 2009, Favre and Gämperle were dismissed together after a bad start to the season after Gämperle had sided with Favre. He had been offered to take over as head coach on an interim basis.
He then returned to FC Zurich, where he resumed his work as an assistant coach under Urs Fischer . After his dismissal in March 2012, Harry Gämperle did not hesitate this time to take over the post of head coach. After twelve years as an assistant coach, this was his first job as head coach. Since Gämperle did not have a coaching license at the time, the U-21 coach Urs Meier , with whom he had already coached FC Baden, was put at his side. Together they trained the FCZ until the end of the season, when a new coach, Rolf Fringer , was signed. However, this was already dismissed in November 2012, so that Meier was allowed to take over the top position again, this time for good.
After Gämperle's contract with FC Zurich expired in the summer of 2013, his long-time sports director Fredy Bickel, who had already switched from FCZ back to BSC YB six months earlier, brought him to the capital club. Unusually, he was signed before a head coach had been found. After the dismissal of Uli Forte in 2015, Gämperle took over on an interim basis, with the ambition to remain head coach on a permanent basis, which did not happen due to unsatisfactory results. Then he was at the BSC YB Adi Hütter and Gerardo Seoane as an assistant and celebrated two Swiss championship titles.
For the 2019/20 season he returned to Hertha BSC , where he assisted Ante Čović . With the separation from Čović, his assistant coaches were also released at the end of November 2019.
