Hard-off -

Hard-Off is the fifth studio album by the American alternative rock band Bloodhound Gang . It was released on December 18, 2015 via Jimmy Frank's Recording Company and 10 years after its predecessor Hefty Fine , it contains 11 songs. As with the previous albums, you can hear songs from different genres, ranging from hip-hop elements to techno . Issues such as diarrhea and the relationship to women are dealt with humorously this time too. Hard-Off was released on CD, as a download and in a limited edition also as a record, but only in the United States. The album was not released in Europe.

background

Lead guitarist Lüpüs Thünder left the band in October 2008 . The Bloodhound Gang announced that Lüpüs had decided not to tour with the band anymore. Daniel P. Carter, previously A lead guitarist , joined the band. In a radio interview in Boston, Jimmy Pop revealed that the band was working on a new album that would contain 10 to 12 songs. Various media reported that the new album will be called Getting Laid on a School Bus , it will be released in 2012. On December 4, 2011, Jimmy Pop said that 25–30 (albeit incomplete) songs had been recorded, of which 10 to 12 were recorded ready to be heard on the new album. In late 2010, the band released the song Altogether Ooky . However, this song can not be heard on the new album, but on the Greatest Hits album Show Us Your Hits, which was released in December 2010 .

Cover

On the cover is an older, heavily made-up woman topless against a light blue background. She looks sideways out of the picture. The cover is similar to that of the previous album Hefty Fine, on which a naked, very overweight man is shown.

Track list

# title description length
1. My Dad Says That's For Pussies During this rocking opener, Jimmy Pop explains that things like “ fair trade coffee”, light beer , toilet paper, libraries and the attachment of fly protection are, according to his father, for “pussies”, which means “ fagot ” or “wimp” , be. In addition, one could not have fun with "unloaded weapons". 2:53
2. Dimes Here Jimmy describes how great he is and that he is predestined to write songs that "make women dance". This song belongs to the house or techno genre and is similar to Uhn Tiss Uhn Tiss Uhn Tiss , the second single from the previous album Hefty Fine . Came on the market as a single. 4:27
3. American bitches This song was also released as a single and deals with American "easy girls", who are also known colloquially as "bitches". Jimmy raves about 18-year-old "bombs" and accuses the listener of being jealous because he doesn't get any bitches. 3:46
4th Chew toy This song is addressed to an unnamed woman who awakens the “animal” in you. Was released as a single. 3:15
5. Uncool As Me (feat. Joey Fatone ) The only song with a feature on the album. Together with Joey Fatone, former member of the boy group NSYNC , Jimmy makes fun of boy bands (quote: "Hey you, you dance like those assholes I've seen!"). Ironically, Joey and Jimmy alternately make derogatory comments about each other in a duet . Was also released as a single. 3:40
6th Clean Up In Aisle Sexy Encrypted allusions are used to persuade a woman to have sex. Another single from the album. It is worth mentioning the sentence " Gestapo no macht Schnell" at the end of the song. 2:52
7th Diary Of A Stranger This song is an homage and at the same time a spoof of the Neue Deutsche Welle and the dark wave genre, because diarrhea is the main theme here. As with Clean Up In Aisle Sexy , Germany is referred to with verses such as “I came from Düsseldorf ” and “Homemade toilet salad”. 3:46
8th. Socially Awkward Penguin The only largely "serious" song on the album. The story of a teenager or man is told from the first person perspective, in which he does not dare to speak to a certain pretty girl or a certain pretty woman, accordingly he blames himself or sinks into self-pity . Eventually he makes up his mind to wave to the girl / woman and she actually waves back, but the teenager / man realizes that the wave was made to another, good-looking man. 3:17
9. Think outside the box Here Jimmy tells of women or groupies that are easy for him to have and that he can and does exploit for his sexual preferences at will, but at the same time considers this to be questionable and at the end of the song sings that women are called Types like him “should rather stay away. 4:16
10. We're gonna bring the party to you As the title of this track suggests, this is about the Bloodhound Gang bringing the party to the people and creating a lively atmosphere. This song is played screaming and is the longest on the entire album. 5:00
11. Bumblebees The album's outro isn't a song, it's an announcement by the band. "When bumblebees find out, what we call them. There's going to be hell to pay." Bumblebees are called Bumblebees in English, where "bumble" means bumbling. So bumbling bee. After a pause of approximately 46 seconds, Jimmy prompts the phone to pick a number between one and ten. Then Jimmy says that the listener pulled the number seven and that you shouldn't change your mind now. 1:20

Heavy pop

Hard-Off received mostly negative ratings from the media. Christian Kollasch from laut.de wrote that the Bloodhound Gang continued to “throw up and piss” where they left off with their last studio album, Hefty Fine . The band utters “unimaginative nonsense”, and on the tracks Dimes and Chew Toy you can hear dull “thump” beats paired with “billo synths”. The song American Bitches is "inconsequential clinking", and Uncool As Me is the highlight of the album. On the song Diary Of A Stranger , Kollasch criticized Jimmy Pop's lyrics, which could hardly be more “scruffy”, yet he couldn't help but laugh. Socially Awkward Penguin is an acceptable catchy tune. Hard-Off seems like a "pile of crap" that emerges from the past and would make grown men laugh again at "fecal humor". Nobody needs this anymore, but it doesn't hurt anyone either. In conclusion, Kollasch described Hard-Off as an "embarrassing party filler".

Editor Oliver from the Austrian website Heavy Pop criticized the “album structure”, which in his opinion was never fluid. Hard-Off rather gives the impression of a "tiring interplay" between two EPs. While the rock numbers would most likely be reminiscent of the old days, the techno-heavy songs are "counteracted" and "intrusive" and do not come close to the humor of songs like Uhn Tiss Uhn Tiss Uhn Tiss . Hard-Off is a record that oscillates between “charming bagatelles” and “cheap” failures, lead singer Jimmy Pop has not lost his feel for melodies, but he no longer knows how to stage it. In conclusion, Oliver wrote that the band was still not taken seriously, but that they could no longer be found secretly good or entertaining. Hard-Off is an album, which even for a band like the Bloodhound Gang seems unworthy.
