Harmen Jan van der Wijck , often also Herman van der Wyck (born November 7, 1769 in Deventer , Netherlands ; † January 18, 1847 in Mannheim ) was a Dutch baron and general who lived after his retirement in Germany , where he called himself Landscape painter and writer .

Harmen Jan van der Wijck was the son of Jan Hendrik van der Wijck, Lord of Stroevelaar (1731–1809) and his wife Maria geb. Brouwer (1732-1788). He embarked on an officer career in Holland and advanced to the rank of major general in the engineering troops .

In 1796 he married Cornelia Constantia van der Muelen (1771-1852) in Amsterdam, with whom he had several children. After retiring from military service, van der Wijck moved to Germany with his family and settled as a private citizen, first in Neuwied and later in Mannheim. He often went on hikes and trips, especially on the Rhine , and from 1820 onwards he created many qualitative landscapes. He was also active as a writer in the natural sciences and technology. In 1825 he published the text “The Middle Rhine and Mannheim in Hydrotechnical View” , in which he also developed theses on the upcoming straightening of the Rhine , and in 1836 the booklet “Overview of the Rhenish and Eifel extinct volcanoes” .

Harmen Jan van der Wijck died in Mannheim in 1847 and was buried in the main cemetery there. His tombstone is now - as a cast - under the arcades at the main entrance.

The nobleman belonged to the knighthood of the province of Overijssel and was a corresponding member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences in Amsterdam. In Mannheim he was one of the members of the Society for Natural History. He also carried the knight class of the Dutch Order of Union .

His son Carel van der Wijck (1797-1852) was also a Dutch general, most recently head of the Dutch colonial army in Java . Another son, Herman van der Wijck (1815-1889), served as a member of the government of the Dutch East Indies. His son Carel Herman Aart van der Wijck (1840–1914) was Governor General and Viceroy of the Dutch East Indies .
