Hartgert "Harrie" Langman (born February 23, 1931 in Akkrum , Utingeradeel , Province of Friesland ; † August 1, 2016 in Drachten ) was a Dutch business manager , economist , university professor and politician of the People's Party voor Vrijheid en Democratie (VVD), who between 1971 and in 1973 was Minister of Economics in the cabinet of Prime Minister Barend Biesheuvel . In 1969 he was one of the government advisors when individual shipyards merged to form Verolme Verenigde Scheepswerven (VVSW) during a shipbuilding crisis, thereby providing impetus for regional economic affairs. During his tenure as Minister of Economics, the Netherlands decided to participate in the construction of the Kalkar nuclear power plant . After leaving the government, he worked as a bank manager and was involved for 30 years as chairman of the liberal Benjamin Marius Telders - Foundation .

Life

Degree and manager

After attending elementary school and graduating from high school at the Christelijk Lyceum in Harderwijk , Langman began studying law in the Netherlands at the Free University of Amsterdam in 1947 , from which he graduated cum laude on November 2, 1950. He also completed a degree in economics there by July 1951 .

In January 1951 he started his professional career as secretary of the board of directors of the Simon de Wit supermarket chain and after completing military service between 1953 and 1955 he worked in various management positions at the shipbuilding company KMS ( Koninklijke Maatschappij "De Schelde" Scheepswerf en Machinefabriek ) , and until March 1965 as secretary of the board and then between March 1965 and December 1, 1967 as deputy chairman of the board of KMS.

From December 1, 1967 to July 6, 1971, he was Director of the Foundation of the Dutch Shipbuilding Industry. In 1969 he was one of the government advisors in this capacity when Verolme Verenigde Scheepswerven (VVSW) came into being during a shipbuilding crisis from mergers of individual shipyards , thereby providing impetus in regional economic matters.

In addition to these activities in the economy, Langman taught from September 1, 1964 to January 1, 1970, first as an associate professor and then from January 1, 1970 to July 6, 1971 as a professor of business administration at the Dutch School of Business in Rotterdam . During his teaching activity he dealt in particular with environmental problems .

On July 6, 1971, Langman, who had only recently become a member of the Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie (VVD), became Minister-President Barend Biesheuvel's Minister of Economics (Minister van Economische Zaken) and held this position until May 11, 1973 During his tenure as Minister of Economics, the Netherlands decided to participate in the construction of the Kalkar nuclear power plant. On June 8, 1973, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Dutch Lion for his longstanding services .

After leaving the government, he was in the June 1973 Board Member of NV Algemene Bank Nederland this until 1 March 1991 when they (ABN) and belonged together with the AMRO Bank (Amsterdamsche Rotterdamsche Bank) for the global ABN AMRO merged .
