Harry Lloyd Frisch (born November 13, 1928 in Vienna , † September 21, 2007 in Albany , New York ) was an American physical chemist .

Life

Harry L. Frisch left Austria with his parents in 1938. He came to Canada with the family in 1940 and to the USA in 1941. In 1947 he received his B.Sc. from Williams College. in chemistry. In 1952 he received his doctorate from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn . He then was a postdoc at Syracuse University until 1954 and Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of Southern California from 1954 to 1956 . From 1956 to 1967 he was employed as a scientist at Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill , New Jersey .

From 1967 until his retirement in 1999 he was a professor at the University at Albany .

Frisch published more than 550 scientific papers, mostly in journals. His main field of work in the 1950s and 1960s was statistical physics for equilibrium and non-equilibrium (transport phenomena). Later he published works with a large number of co-authors on various fields of physical chemistry as well as polymer physics and chemistry . He and Edel Wasserman wrote a fundamental essay on topological chemistry such as catenanes ( Chemical Topology , J. Am. Chem. Soc., Volume 83, 1961, pp. 3789-3795) and similar entangled or interlocked ring compounds.

He was a Fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS), the American Physical Society (1964), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1966). In 1973 he received the Boris Pregel Award from NYAS and in 1993 the Ordre des Palmes Académiques (Chevalier). In 1997 he was a Guggenheim fellow . The American Chemical Society presented him with the Joel Henry Hildebrand Award in 2000 .
