The Harz Club e. V. (Heimat-, Wander- und Naturschutzbund) with its seat in Clausthal-Zellerfeld is an association for the maintenance of the Harz tradition and ensures the maintenance of the hiking trails there. It was founded in Seesen in 1886 and today has around 13,000 members in 87 branch associations that have formed in the villages in and around the Harz Mountains in Lower Saxony, Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt. The main association is entered in the register of associations at the Braunschweig Local Court (VR 170013).

history

The Harz Club was founded on August 8, 1886 in Seesen. The railway director Albert Schneider became the first chairman. Co-founders were u. a. Oberforstrat Carl Reuss as deputy chairman and publisher and bookseller Heinrich Conrad Huch as secretary. At the first ordinary general meeting in Goslar in April 1887, the association already had 23 branch associations with 1134 members. His first task was to open up the Harz for hikers and tourism. Later on, numerous home groups were founded and the Harz customs were maintained. Nature conservation was included in the statutes as an important goal as early as 1907. Before the outbreak of World War II, the number of members was almost 20,000 in 120 branch clubs.

After the division of the Harz, the development of the Harz Nature Park was in the foreground in the western part. In the GDR , the Harz Club was banned as an organization, and similar tasks were performed in sub-groups of the GDR Cultural Association .

After reunification , more than 40 branch associations were founded in the Harz region of the new federal states of Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia . In 1994 the name of the association was changed to “Heimat-, Wander- und Naturschutzbund”.

The main chairman was Michael Ermrich until April 25, 2015 , from this date the Lord Mayor of Goslar Oliver Junk took over the chairmanship of the Harz Club as club president. The Harz Club has an office in Clausthal-Zellerfeld and is a member of the Association of German Mountain and Hiking Associations .
