Hau Do Suan

Hau Do Suan (born November 1, 1954 ) is a Myanmar diplomat who has been the permanent representative of the government in Naypyidaw next to the UN headquarters in New York City since July 5, 2016 .

He holds a BA in History and a Masters in Public Administration from the National University of Singapore .

Career

In 1979 he joined the Myanmar Foreign Service. From 1991 to 1996 he headed the International Organizations Division of the Ministry. From 1996 to 1999 he worked at the Embassy in Canberra , Australia . From 1999 to 2003 he was Deputy Director of the East Asia and Pacific Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 2003 to 2006 he was Counselor in Beijing . From 2004 to 2005 he held exequatur as Myanmar Consul General in Kunming in the People's Republic of China . Until 2009 he headed the Middle East and Africa department . From 2009 to 2013 he was Deputy Director General and then Director General of the Political Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From June 10, 2013 to July 5, 2016, he was Ambassador to Ottawa , Canada . On December 27, 2019, of the 193 members of the United Nations General Assembly, 134 voted for, 9 against, with 28 abstentions, for the resolution calling on the government of Myanmar to take immediate action to combat hatred against the Rohingya and other minorities in seize the states of Rakhine State , Kachin State, and Shan State .

The UN ambassador for Myanmar, Hau Do Suan, called the resolution "another classic example of the selective and discriminatory application of human rights norms with double standards".

He said it was intended to put "undesirable political pressure" on Myanmar and not attempt to resolve "the complex situation in Rakhine State". He is married and has two children.
