rear window

The rear window is a pane of automotive glass , which allows the driver of a vehicle rear visibility. In the past, toughened safety glass (ESG) was often used.

The rear window is attached floatingly in the window frame with rubber profiles or, in modern vehicles, is glued or glued on, rarely screwed in. It then makes a significant contribution to the torsional rigidity of a vehicle and is therefore a load-bearing part of the body .

Depending on the body shape, a rear window wiper is usually attached to clean the windshield from precipitation and dirt . In order to avoid fogging due to moisture , the pane can be electrically heated. In the early 1960s, when there were no electrically heated rear windows, some vehicles were equipped with hot air blowers specifically for the rear window (e.g. Opel Kapitän / Admiral / Diplomat A ). The heating takes place either through an electrically conductive coating of the glass or through very fine wires inserted into the composite film.

The curvature, size and tint of the pane are also an important design element. However, they are restricted by legal requirements and the manufacturing process. For example, a tailgate can be designed as an all-glass flap.

Automobiles with backward sloping rear windows

In most automobiles, the rear window was and is inclined forwards, if only for reasons of air resistance. But there are also some automobiles in which the designers opted for rear windows that tilt backwards, such as the Ford Anglia 105E from 1959 or the Citroën Ami 6 from 1961. The Renault Megane II hatchback from 2002 had a vertically positioned rear window.

Automobiles with concave rear windows

Inwardly curved - concave - rear windows of had Mazda Carol P360 from 1962, the 1973 Chevrolet Impala (5th generation) and the Corvette C3 as a coupe, the Citroen CX sedan, the Citroën C6 and Citroen C5 sedan in the second generation (2008 ), the concept vehicle Peugeot 908 RC , the prototype of the Tatra 613 -1 Vignale (1969).

Automobiles with a folding rear window

As early as 1963, the Hillman Imp had an all-glass flap, followed by the Volvo P1800 ES in 1971, the Bitter CD in 1973 and the Talbot Sunbeam in 1979 . Later, the almost identical Peugeot 107 , Toyota Aygo and Citroën C1 got a glass flap without a frame as well as the BYD F0 similar to them . The DR Zero has stood out from its blueprint for this property since 2015 . In 1974 the Lotus Elite Type 75/83 only got chrome strips around the folding rear window. In 2015, the McLaren 570GT got a side-hinged, folding rear window that is only glued to a thin frame. The Citroën AX also has a frameless rear window, which is glued to the hinges and the plastic lower part to form a tailgate.

Automobiles with a retractable rear window

At the Ford 17M tournament of 1960/61, the station wagon of the Ford P3 , the option of a bottom hinged tailgate was temporarily given, which required the frameless rear window to be cranked down to open it. Electrically retractable in a tailgate that can be opened either to the left or down, this was what the almost identical station wagons on the GM B platform had : Buick Estate Wagon (1977–1990), Buick LeSabre in the fifth generation, Chevrolet Caprice Station Wagon in the third generation, Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser (1977–1990), sixth generation Pontiac Bonneville (1977–1981), fifth generation Pontiac Catalina (1977–1981), fifth generation Pontiac Parisienne (1977–1986), Pontiac Safari and Pontiac Grand Safari . Some of the previous models were similarly equipped.

Automobiles with horizontally split rear window

The Lamborghini Espada , the Honda CRX (type ED9 / EE8, 1987-1991) and the Honda CR-Z , the Mazda 323 C (1994-2000), the Audi A2 and the Toyota Prius 2, 3 and have a horizontally split rear window 4th
