Hedwig Schmitz
Hedwig Schmitz , née Hedwig Stephan (born June 15, 1887 in Jüterbog , Germany , † February 18, 1976 in Hamburg ) was a German actress in theater, film and television.
Live and act
The daughter of a master shoemaker received private acting lessons and then started a stage career that took her to Saarbrücken , Trier and Cottbus , among others . Even before the Second World War , Hedwig Schmitz, who was married to the actor Hans Schmitz, worked on stages in Hamburg (Kammerspiele and Thalia Theater), the city that was to become her permanent home, especially after 1945.
She only left the Hanseatic city during the German occupation of France and performed at the Deutsches Theater in Lille for several years. After the end of the war, Hedwig Schmitz continued her theatrical work at the Thalia Theater and at the Junge Bühne in Hamburg. Since 1948, offers from film have also been added. In 1953, with the beginning of the television age in the Federal Republic, Hedwig Schmitz was also one of the first artists to work regularly for this new medium.
In addition to her work on stage and in front of the camera, Hedwig Schmitz also worked as a radio and voice actress . At over 88, she was still standing in front of a film camera.
