The wonderful Galathee is a German comedy film by Rolf Meyer with Hannelore Schroth , Viktor de Kowa and Willy Fritsch in the leading roles.

action

The story varies in the one-act operetta The Beautiful Galathée by Franz von Suppè . In imperial Germany at the turn of the century, two men in a small town, the sculptor Viktor Kolin and the conductor Marcel Thomas, each worked on the gala theme in their own way. While one tries to approach the Galathee in a musical way, the other plans to carve the nymph in stone. Viktor has already chosen a young woman to sit for him as a model for the statue: It is the young Leni, a simple girl from the people who works as a temporary worker at the vegetable market.

Leni feels very flattered and promptly falls in love with Viktor. This makes her a competitor to the singer Victoria Mertens, the sculptor's friend. The sheet music man, in turn, shows interest in Victoria, which adds extra piquancy to the erotic dance. When Viktor has finally formed his Galathee, he suddenly loses interest in Leni, who had hoped that the sculpture would reciprocate her feelings. Full of anger, she goes into his studio and smashes the work of art. A lawsuit ensues in which Viktor only now realizes Leni's true feelings. With this insight he no longer has any problems with Victoria planning to get engaged to Kapellmeister Thomas.

Production notes

The shooting took place from mid-December 1949 in the Junge Film-Union-Studios in Bendestorf and in Berlin-Tempelhof . The premiere was on April 13, 1950.

Helmuth Volmer took over the production management. Franz Schroedter designed the film structures, Herbert Ploberger the costumes. Willy Dehmel wrote the texts for Franz Grothes composition.

This production was a so-called exchange film between West Germany and East Germany and therefore also started (on September 11, 1950) in East Berlin and the GDR. The GDR only withdrew it from its cinemas in October 1953.

Reviews

In the lexicon of the international film it says: "Unnecessary musical comedy with all sorts of amorous mess in Biedermeier costumes."
