She began her career in 1988 at Daimler-Benz , as assistant to the plant management in the Mannheim commercial vehicle engine plant. She worked for Daimler-Benz until 1998.

In 1998 she became head of engine and genset assembly at MTU Friedrichshafen . Due to the growing number of units, she was later commissioned to reorganize the entire 500-employee production process. From 2007 onwards, as part of the reorganization of the company and the IPO, she was responsible for the global development and expansion of quality and risk management in the Tognum Group. Change to Deutsche Bahn

Railway boss Rüdiger Grube wanted to fill the newly created board position for technology with a woman. Furthermore, the federal government, as the owner of Deutsche Bahn, pushed for a woman. According to his own information, Grube himself looked for possible candidates on the Internet.

On July 22, 2013, the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Bahn AG decided at a special meeting to appoint Hanagarth as the successor to Volker Kefer as head of the technology department for an initial period of three years . The Personnel Committee of the Supervisory Board decided in favor of Hanagarth on July 19, 2013. In addition to Hanagarth, there was also a male candidate for election.

On July 24, 2013, it was presented at the half-year press conference. Her employment contract with BMW would not allow her to start work until April 2014. Deutsche Bahn and BMW then negotiated an early switch.

She was finally formally appointed at the Supervisory Board meeting on September 18, 2013 from December 1, 2013 to November 30, 2016. She was the first female board member responsible for technology in a large German company. Four years after Margret Suckale left the company , there was again a woman on the company's board of directors.

The technology department is responsible for purchasing, quality, the environment and innovations in the DB Group. One of her tasks was to get a grip on persistent problems with delivery delays for vehicles.

Internal critics complained that Hanagarth lacked visibility and asked about the purpose of the department. She did not get along with the technology department and the corporate structures.

On July 15, 2015, Deutsche Bahn announced that Hanagarth would resign from the management board with effect from the end of July 2015 as part of a realignment of the DB Group.
