Heile, heile Gänsje is a carnival song whose melody and stanzas for the Mainz Carnival in 1929 were written by Martin Mundo and performed by him for the first time. An older nursery rhyme is used as the chorus of the song. After the Second World War and the almost complete destruction of the city of Mainz , it was reinterpreted by Ernst Neger with additional text by Georg Zimmer-Emden.

The title came in first among the "111 greatest carnival hits" that SWR television and SWR4 put to selection in the 2009 carnival season.

origin

The song is based on a variant of a nursery rhyme that mothers recited in a comforting way after a painful injury to young children. It has been handed down in various regional variants since the first half of the 19th century. Variants with the beginning of the text “Heile heile Gänsje” have been handed down from the Aschaffenburg area and from Steinmark in Mainfranken .

In 1929 Martin Mundo, who was very important for the Mainz Carnival , performed it for the first time during a meeting of fools. Even then, he criticized the French occupation at the time in a da capo . In 1952, a setting of this verse with two stanzas composed by Georg Zimmer-Emden about Mainz destroyed by the war became known to a larger audience when Ernst Neger sang it during a carnival event to the applause and the tears of the audience. In the period that followed, up until the 1970s, he not only had to recite it all the time, it also became a catchphrase nationwide .

2008

Bell at the Molsberger Hof

On December 15, 2007, the historic Molsberger Hof in Bodenheim (approx. 12 km south of Mainz) was almost completely destroyed by fire. A huge tarpaulin with the complete lyrics was printed on the erected scaffolding. There was also a bell in front of the site fence, after which the complete song by Ernst Neger could be heard.

2009

In 2009, on the 100th birthday of Ernst Neger, a music box with a melody in the form of a stuffed goose with a fool's cap and plaster on the grand piano appeared as a reminiscence of the song "Heile Heile Gänsje", which was chosen at number 1 .

2020

In mid-April, fans of 1. FSV Mainz 05 launched a solidarity campaign in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic , in which they want to financially support three charitable organizations. As part of the campaign, T-shirts, jute bags and stickers with the slogan “Heile Heile Gänsje, it will soon be aries” and a goose are produced and sold. 100% of the proceeds will go to Poverty and Health in Germany eV , Cooking for Heroes Mainz and Doctors Without Borders . In addition, on April 11, 2020, a banner with the inscription "Heile Heile Gänsje, it will soon be good" was placed on the parapet of the Mainz State Theater . On April 13, 2020, numerous posters followed throughout the city. The fans chose exactly this saying, because the song line is known to almost everyone in Mainz and it should encourage the residents of the city. Since the song, the carnival and the local football club are closely linked, this adaptation is obvious.
