The Holy Spirit Church in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee is a branch church belonging to the Roman Catholic parish of St. Egid . It is located on Heiligengeistplatz on the western edge of the city center.

history

The Holy Spirit Church was first mentioned in a document in 1355. In 1381 it was mentioned together with a cemetery and hospital. Between 1563 and the Counter-Reformation in 1600 it served as a Protestant prayer house, and in 1582 the church was rebuilt. From 1630 to 1639 the building master Adam Kolerig, from whom the Kreuzbergl Church also originates, was largely rebuilt or converted . The subsequent consecration was carried out by Bishop Leonhard von Lavant . In 1670 the estates called the Ursulines to Klagenfurt and handed over the church to them. In 1674 the foundation stone was laid for the monastery, which was consecrated four years later. During the French occupation in 1809/1810, the monastery and church served, among other things, as a horse stable and warehouse. Until 1848 the church was owned by the Carinthian estates and was taken over by the Ursulines in 1849. Damage was caused by a tower fire in 1681, the whole complex burned down during the town fire in 1723 , and the church was damaged by bombs in the Second World War . Restorations took place in 1886, 1928, 1932 and 1960.

Interior of the church
Ceiling painting of the Ascension of Christ (1886)

The church is integrated into the monastery building from the 17th century, the front side is accordingly the southern long side facing the Heiligengeistplatz. The core of the church is Gothic, but heavily influenced by Baroque. The west tower has an articulated onion helmet . The four windows facing the square, two each in the nave and two in the choir, come from the Gothic period and were enlarged in the Baroque , with a round window to the west. The main portal on the south side has a classicistic porch (approx. 1800) with double columns, in 2014 the portal was redesigned by Werner Hofmeister .

The interior is a single-nave hall with four bays , the barrel vault with stitch caps rests on pilasters . The organ gallery above a cross vault has rich acanthus decoration and dates from 1710. The choir is only slightly drawn in opposite the nave and has a 5/8 end . Its ribbed vault rests on circular services.

The vault of the ship bears two large paintings by Josef and August Veiter from 1886: the Nativity and the Ascension. In the spandrels there are pictures of prophets and church fathers . Be on the triumphal arch wall scenes from the story of creation .

Facility

The high altar

The high altar dates from 1776 and has columns and pilasters made of stucco lustro . The altar panel shows the Whitsun miracle and was painted on copper plates by Lorenz Glaber in 1635 . In the altarpiece there is an oval picture depicting St. Shows Joseph with child. The tabernacle is temple-shaped, has a copper roof and is made of stucco lustro. The gold decoration of the high altar consists of rocaille and flower pendants, and mixes late rococo with new baroque. The two side altars from the end of the 18th century are similar and show the Sacred Heart and Mary in a shrine. The pulpit, also made around 1776, has a rococo decor. On the cover is the book with seven seals , the divine lamb and two putti .

The cruciform chapel in the tower houses a small, ornamented altar, the crucifixion of which is attributed to Josef Ferdinand Fromiller .

On the walls there are several individual Baroque figures (Archangel Raphael, St. Michael, St. John Nepomuk). The prayer benches are inlaid and date from 1740.
