Established as a lung sanatorium (1896–1945)

In the second half of the 19th century, the number of lung patients in the German Empire rose sharply. About a third of all patients between the ages of 15 and 60 suffered from pulmonary tuberculosis. The Grabowsee sanctuary was initially planned as an experimental facility by the Red Cross People's Sanatorium Association . It was to be investigated whether lung patients could also be treated successfully in the northern German lowlands. Until then, human medicine assumed that lung diseases could only be improved or cured in the mild climate of the Mediterranean Sea or in pure mountain air. So in 1896 the first lung sanatorium in northern Germany was established. In 1900 there were already 200 beds available for slightly to seriously ill men. During the four years of the First World War, Grabowsee was used as a club hospital by the Red Cross for the treatment of soldiers with lung disease. POWs were also housed here until 1918 .

However, the war and the inflationary period also brought the sanatorium into great economic hardship. The people's sanatorium association sold the institution on June 1, 1920 to the Brandenburg State Insurance Institute . From 1926 onwards, extensions were built so that the number of beds doubled to around 420 by the 1930s.

The sanatorium consists of the administration building, the Robert Koch building, the east building, the Hans Böhm building, the south building, the treatment building, the reception building, connecting corridors, the chapel, the director's residence, the gatehouse, the doctor's residence, the officials residence, the chimney with the elevated tank, the gardener's house, the seawater pump house and horticultural facilities .

Use after the Second World War (1945–1995)

Thanks to the discovery of antibiotics , tuberculosis could be cured more quickly: long hospital stays were no longer necessary and the facilities were no longer used for medical purposes. Grabowsee was used by the Red Army as a Soviet military hospital between 1945 and 1995 . Some systems were run down in the long term, so that after the fall of the Wall a new use did not seem possible without enormous expense.

Todays use

Only a few buildings are in use today, most of the ensemble has fallen into disrepair and has been plagued by vandals and metal thieves in recent years .

Kids Globe e. V.

Since 2005 the Kids Globe e. V. for the reconstruction of the old buildings and the establishment of an international academy for children and young people on the site. Under the patronage of Roman Herzog , the Kids Globe eV association has set itself the task of converting the building into a free educational facility for children and young people.

The historical context of the site and the checkered history of Oranienburg (for example the local proximity to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp ) should also flow into the project. The association's activities span the fields of art, craft, music, agriculture, entrepreneurship and research. In 2013, the first (educational) events with young people from European and non-European countries took place on the site.

Kids Globe wants to buy the property from the owner, a Berlin businessman, for around ten million euros and transfer it to a foundation. The further complete renovation would cost 40 to 50 million euros.

Film, photography and events

In recent years, the site has often been used as a backdrop for filming and taking photos. In 2011 the Artbase , an art and music festival, was held on the site . In 2013 the site was used as the location for the film Monuments Men - Unusual Heroes and in 2017 for the film Heilstätten , which takes place in the Beelitz-Heilstätten . The video Judged by von Euzen was shot on the premises .
