The Panzergrenadierbrigade 38 "Saxony-Anhalt" was a brigade with stationing space in Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia and the headquarters of the staff was last in Weißenfels . The brigade was decommissioned at the end of 2002 and was subordinate to the 13th Panzer Grenadier Division until the end .
Association badge
The coat of arms is almost identical to the coat of arms of the state of Saxony-Anhalt . The symbol of sovereignty of the German army, the Iron Cross , was added. The coat of arms shows in the upper shield the Saxon diamond wreath with a Prussian eagle in the heraldic upper left field, which symbolizes the former Prussian province of Saxony . In the lower field you can find the striding Ascanian bear on a wall as a symbol of the former Free State of Anhalt . In doing so, the brigade did not use the heraldic symbols of the division that was originally above it, as was customary for the brigades in the Federal Republic before 1990. Her coat of arms was also framed by a silver cord with a black coat of arms woven into it. This border was not common for a German brigade until 1990, but was mainly reserved for the divisions. One reason may be the establishment as a homeland security brigade, which in its heraldic representation was not based on the armorial system of the field army. Rather, the territorial aspect was in the foreground, so that the brigade fell back on the coat of arms of their "homeland".
history
In 1991 the brigade in Halle an der Saale was put into service as Homeland Security Brigade 38 from parts of the 11th Motorized Rifle Division of the NVA . The brigade was given the nickname "Saxony-Anhalt" at the beginning. In 1991 the staff moved from Halle to Weißenfels. The brigade was renamed Panzergrenadierbrigade 38 in 1995.
In 1999 parts of the brigade in Bosnia-Herzegovina ( SFOR ) were used. In 2001/2002 the soldiers of the brigade were deployed again in the Balkans before the brigade was disbanded in 2002. For this purpose the Panzer Pionierkompanie 380, the Panzergrenadierbataillon 381 and the Panzerartilleriebataillon 385 were dissolved. The 383 tank battalion switched to tank brigade 12 and was only disbanded on June 30, 2007 as the last active unit. The brigade was officially disbanded on December 20, 2002.
