Description of coat of arms

The official description of the coat of arms reads:

“The state coat of arms shows in a divided shield, divided above nine times, the colors gold over black, diagonally on the right with a green diamond wreath and on the left - at the height of the top five divisions - in the silver free field a black eagle with gold reinforcement and red tongue. The lower field shows a striding black bear in silver on a black grooved red battlement wall with an open gate. "

Even if the above-mentioned law has been replaced by the National Emblem Act of June 2, 1998, it continues to apply unchanged.

meaning

The coat of arms shows the Saxon diamond wreath in the upper field and the Prussian eagle , which symbolizes the former Prussian province of Saxony , in the upper left free field (right from the viewer's perspective) . In the lower field you can find the striding Ascanian bear on a wall as a symbol of the former Free State of Anhalt .

history

From 1948 until its dissolution in 1952, the coat of arms of the province of Saxony-Anhalt shows the Saxon shield, provided with ears of wheat (agriculture) and mallets and iron (mining). In contrast to the coat of arms of the Prussian province of Saxony, the sequence of the horizontal stripes begins with the color black. After the re-establishment of the state of Saxony-Anhalt in 1990, a new state coat of arms was designed. It shows the coat of arms of the Prussian province of Saxony with a Saxon diamond wreath and the (uncrowned) Prussian eagle in the upper (heraldic) left corner. The coat of arms of Saxony-Anhalt is thus the only coat of arms of a German state that has a direct reference to Prussia. In addition, the heraldic symbol of the bear can be found on a wall as a symbol of the former Principality of Anhalt-Bernburg and the Free State of Anhalt at the foot of the shield .

Country symbol

Country symbol

Since the state coat of arms may only be used with permission and only by official bodies, the state government has designed a freely usable state symbol. It represents the coat of arms in a simplified form. The black and yellow stripes behind the diamond wreath are omitted. The background here is shown in white, the diamond wreath protrudes into the lower part of the coat of arms with the bear. There is also no demarcation between the upper and lower field and the field of the Prussian eagle. The coat of arms is backed by the national colors.

Since the new version of the State Emblem Act Saxony-Anhalt - HzG LSA of April 27, 2017, the use of the coat of arms is still restricted according to §2. However, Section 3 now describes the state flag with a coat of arms. Until then, this was the state service flag and also only reserved for authorities. According to Section 3 of the HzG LSA of April 27, 2017, anyone is allowed to use the national flag.
