By the end of 1972 there were 63 districts in Baden-Württemberg. In the course of the district reform of Baden-Württemberg on January 1, 1973, almost all districts were dissolved. The districts of Emmendingen, Göppingen and Heidenheim remained. From the area of the rest, 32 new districts were formed.

Of the 60 disbanded counties

  • six had no coat of arms, namely Muellheim , Münsingen , Pforzheim , Reutlingen , Rottweil and Saulgau ;
  • had ten coats of arms, which were taken over from their legal successors of the same name (Biberach, Böblingen, Calw, Freudenstadt, Heilbronn, Lörrach, Ludwigsburg, Ravensburg, Tübingen, Tuttlingen), in addition the Ortenaukreis took over that of the district of Offenburg and the Alb-Donau-Kreis that of the District of Ulm ;
  • had seven legal successors of the same name, but they adopted changed coats of arms (Esslingen, Karlsruhe, Konstanz, Rastatt, Schwäbisch Hall, Sigmaringen, Waldshut).

The lost coats of arms were as follows:

In 1959, the General State Archives proposed a coat of arms for the district of Müllheim: a golden post covered with three rafters in red, next to a gold miner's lamp on the right and a silver grape on the left. However, the coat of arms was not approved by the district, which then remained without a coat of arms until its dissolution.
