The German state of Baden-Württemberg has existed since the completion of the regional and administrative reform and the merger of other municipalities

These are distributed as follows:

440 cities and municipalities have come together to carry out their administrative business in 114 municipal administration associations and 471 cities and municipalities have come together to form 156 agreed administrative associations .

Nine cities have more than 100,000 inhabitants. These include eight of the nine city districts and the large district town of Reutlingen. There are mayors in large district towns and cities.

Furthermore, there are two uninhabited, community-free areas in Baden-Württemberg , the " Gutsgebiet Münsingen " in the district of Reutlingen and the "community-free property" in Rheinau (Ortenaukreis).

With the exception of Baden-Baden, the nine urban districts are large cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants.
