The most populous district is the district of Munich with 348,871 inhabitants, the poorest in the district of Lichtenfels with 66,838 inhabitants. The largest independent city and the most populous municipality is the state capital Munich with 1.472 million inhabitants. The most populous municipality is Chiemsee ( district of Rosenheim ) with around 230 inhabitants. 982 municipalities have come together to carry out their administrative business in 311 administrative communities.
