history
Until the church is planted
Nothing is known for sure about the origin of the place, which was located in Nordgau (Bavaria) . Presumably, there was a first settlement around the year 900 n. Chr. It is noteworthy that at the municipality associated with Calvary and along the Windisch Eschenbacher road prehistoric shards (dating LATENE B / C1 and Urnfield) and a plurality of annealed and non-annealed Silex nuclear stones and Silexabschläge and Tools of end-Paleolithic and Mesolithic origin have been found. It can be assumed that there was a Stone Age open-air station there , where flint tools were made. According to the Tabula Peutingeriana , the area around the birth of Christ was in the settlement area of the Nariskers .
In the year 1000 the place already had a Christian church and was initially called Traindorf. This place name possibly goes back to driving or drifting , i.e. a place to change horses. Traindorf was on three important old trade and military routes, the so-called Golden Road from Prague via the Choden region to Nuremberg , Magdeburger Strasse from Regensburg to Magdeburg and the Eisenstrasse, which came from Auerbach to the Golden Road in Traindorf. In the 13th century the current name Altenstadt was created. Until 1261 Altenstadt or Traindorf was owned by the Counts of Alt (en) dorf, later that of Ortenburg . Then Altenstadt an der Waldnaab became the property of Duke Ludwig der Strenge, whose son, Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian , pledged the rule to the Landgraves of Leuchtenberg . Later it was in the feudal area of the Bohemian Crown and was immediately imperial. The fiefdoms at this time were the lords of Pflugk , von Guttenstein - Vrtba (noble family) and the knights of Heideck. Subsequently, until 1806, Altenstadt belonged to the duchy imperial county of Störnstein under the Lobkowitz Princely House and was sold to Bavaria in 1807.
According to the Rhine Confederation Act of 1806, Altenstadt an der Waldnaab was in the Kingdom of Bavaria under the Wittelsbachers until 1918 . In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .
19th and 20th centuries
The construction of the station and the connection to the railway network in 1862 encouraged the settlement of numerous glassworks in the region, which also brought an economic boom for Altenstadt. The companies Beyer & Co. and Hofbauer produced globally valued lead crystal with corresponding sales and income. A shift in consumer tastes resulted in the loss of outlets for lead crystal items and the loss of hundreds of jobs in the 1980s and 1990s.
Religions
Altenstadt has two Catholic and one Evangelical Lutheran churches. A Muslim religious community emerged after the end of World War II. The majority of the residents are Roman Catholic.
Changes to the municipality
The district of Mühlberg was spun off from the Altenstadt community on April 1, 1972 at the request of its residents and has since belonged to the neighboring town of Neustadt an der Waldnaab. On July 1, 1975, the previously independent municipality of Meerbodenreuth was incorporated.

Altenstadt is on Glasstrasse . The most famous sight is the Romanesque fortified church of the Assumption of Mary , which was built around 1150. In the church are the graves of the von Heideck family and a baptismal font from the 12th century. Until the opening of the Heimatmuseum, the so-called Alten Forsthaus was the home of the Heimatverein, the so-called Anton-Wurzer-Zimmer. In 2014 the collection was moved to the museum in the "Old School House". Other sights are the plague column from 1697 and the Way of the Cross on Calvary. In the Golden Street (Zlata stezka) between the elementary school and the kindergarten, which was officially inaugurated in March 2008, the course of the Golden Street from Nuremberg to Prague is illustrated extensively on 14 boards .
