history

Since amber was transported to Northern Italy on the north-south route , Magdeburger Strasse is part of the Amber Roads . The exact course and whether it was more a system of streets is controversial. In addition to amber, fish, salt and other commercial goods were also transported on this road.

The Magdeburger Straße is already mentioned by Claudius Ptolemy from Alexandria in his geography in the 2nd century.

The north-south routes are the older highways and date from the time of the Roman Empire to the time of the Merovingians and Carolingians . From the 9th century, with the eastern expansion of the Franconian Empire, the east-west connections gained in importance. This trend continued into the 17th century. From the 18th century, the importance of north-south traffic connections grew again.

In the 15th century the Magdeburger Straße took the following course: Regensburg - Kallmünz - Burglengenfeld - Schwandorf - Schwarzenfeld - Wernberg - Weiden - Neustadt an der Waldnaab - Tirschenreuth - Mitterteich - Eger - Asch

In Asch, the route split into two branches.

The road continued from Magdeburg to the Baltic Sea and the North Sea.

In the vicinity of Neustadt an der Waldnaab, Magdeburger Strasse crossed Goldene Strasse .
