Course and characteristics

The Naabtal cycle path begins in Luhe-Wildenau. Here the Haidenaab coming from the northwest and the Waldnaab coming from the north converge and form the Naab, which flows further south to Regensburg. This starting point can be reached by train by taking the Regensburg – Weiden railway to the Luhe-Wildenau train station.

If you want to do the cycle path in the opposite direction from the source to Luhe-Wildenau, you could drive to the Silberhütte . Unfortunately, there is no way to get there by public transport.

On the Waldnaab cycle path there are some very beautiful, level, well signposted sections on developed cycle paths along the Waldnaab. Between these sections, however, there are long stretches that are poorly marked, far away from the river on busy country roads that constantly lead steeply up and downhill. These routes represent a major challenge for cyclists with normal fitness, even with an electric bike, and are completely unsuitable for families with children.

Luhe-Wildenau to the mouth of the Frombach

The cycle path begins in Luhe-Wildenau with a beautiful section that leads especially from Pirk to Neustadt an der Waldnaab on cycle paths directly along the water. This beautiful section ends at the northwest edge of Neustadt and the cycle path changes to a narrow, dark country road that climbs steeply 45 meters to Mühlberg . Drivers who drive through the curves of this road at a considerable speed do not expect cyclists to come by the roadside. After Mühlberg it's easy up and down to Denkreuth, another 40 meters higher . From Denkreuth at an altitude of 484 m, the path descends steeply down to Waldnaab at 410 m. It crosses the Waldnaab and on the other side rises again to 443 m. Via Wurz , Kotzenbach , Pfaffenreuth , he reaches Neuhaus, 474 m high . From Neuhaus, the cycle path leads far away from the river over the mountains up to 506 m and only descends when it meets the Frombach, through the Frombachtal into the Waldnaab valley.

variant

You can avoid this unpleasant and sweaty section by getting on the train in Neustadt and taking the train to Windischeschenbach. In Windischeschenbach you can then cycle along the river down in the Waldnaab valley instead of over the mountains. From Windischeschenbach train station, drive 1.2 km north to the city center and then east along the circular loop road on the Waldnaabsteig, a good hiking trail that begins here, until you reach the Waldnaab after 500 m. Now you first drive 200 m on the west side of the Waldnaab, then over a small bridge to the east side of the river. After another 300 m the Waldnaabsteig leads under the state road 2181 . The Fichtelnaab joins the Waldnaab 100 m behind the underpass. From this mouth to the source, the Waldnaab is called Tirschenreuther Waldnaab . The Waldnaabsteig now always leads directly along the river until it meets the official Waldnaabtal cycle path again after 5 km at the mouth of the Frombach.

Windischeschenbach and especially Neuhaus with its many sights offer good overnight stays as a stopover.

Frombach estuary to Waldnaab origin

The most beautiful and spectacular section of the Waldnaab Valley now follows from the mouth of the Frombach to the Loghütte tavern . Behind the Loghütte tavern, you can still cycle on the west side of the Waldnaab 300 m to the butter churn and another kilometer to the Sauerbrunnen with sulfur and carbonated water, but then you have to return to the log cabin on the same path. At the log cabin, the Waldnaabtal cycle path separates from the Waldnaab and leads over the mountains, ascent up to 502 m, in a north-easterly direction to Falkenberg . On this section, the Waldnaabtal cycle path and the Leuchtenberg tour share the route. From Falkenberg, the Waldnaabtal cycle path now leads north again near the river. After about 5 km it meets the Vizinalbahnradweg and joins it. If you are tired of the ups and downs, you can simply stay on the Vizinalbahnradweg as far as Bärnau and only then switch back to the Waldnaabtal-Radweg. The official Waldnaabtal cycle path deviates from the Vizinalbahn cycle path in larger and smaller arcs, but always returns to it. From Bärnau the Waldnaabtal-Radweg changes to the Grünes-Dach-Radweg until its end at the Waldnaab origin. This last piece is very demanding. It leads into the mountains and there are climbs of over 200 meters in altitude to be mastered.
