history

The place was first mentioned in 822 as "Wigenheim". The basic word of the place name is heim ( ahd. For apartment, dwelling), which is determined by the personal name Wigo or Wīgo . A person with this name is to be regarded as the founder of the settlement.

Weigenheim was referred to in older literature together with the neighboring villages of Herrnsheim , Iffigheim and Seinsheim as an imperial village that was only subordinate to the emperor. However, the head of the empire there probably only owned the bailiwick that he had received from the Würzburg bishop. After the decline of the Staufer in the second half of the 12th century, the Hohenlohe took over these "imperial goods under the mountains" ( bona sub montibus ). From then on, Weigenheim was administered from Seinsheim.

On July 1, 1972, the previously independent communities of Geckenheim and Reusch and the community part of Frankenberg Castle, which had previously belonged to Geckenheim, were incorporated.
