history

Until the 18th century

The place was first mentioned in a document in 741. However, it was already settled significantly earlier. This was shown by grave finds from around 600 in the area of today's fortress road. There are partly Christian and partly pagan burials in the cemetery. The grave goods included a long sword and various pottery. An even older settlement, which was inhabited in the 4th century, was found on Bamberger Straße.

During the time of the tribal duchies , the place was in the Duchy of Franconia . The city charter was granted around 1235. Königshofen was owned by the Counts of Henneberg from 1200 and came through two divisions of the Henneberg-Schleusingen line in 1347 and 1353 to the heiress Elisabeth von Henneberg-Schleusingen († 1389), who was married to Count Eberhard II of Württemberg . He sold the place in 1354 to the Würzburg monastery . The Würzburg bishops expanded Königshofen into a fortress .

The Counts of Henneberg- (Aschach-) Römhild acquired the castle and the Königshofen office in 1400 as a pledge, and in 1412 through purchase from the Würzburg monastery. In 1485 the first division in the Römhild line took place, whereby Königshofen fell to the Romanhildic part under Count Friedrich II of Henneberg-Aschach († 1488). The place was later returned to the Würzburg Monastery by redeeming the pledge. Then the city became the seat of an episcopal bailiff. There is evidence of a medieval leprosy in Bad Königshofen in 1603 , which was called the Siechhaus.

In the years 1631 to 1635 Königshofen was occupied by the Swedes . After 1650 the city was expanded into a strong bastionary fortress.

19th and 20th centuries

As part of the Hochstift Würzburg , which belonged to the Franconian Empire , the office of Königshofen was secularized in 1803 in favor of Bavaria and left to Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany to form the Grand Duchy of Würzburg in the Peace of Pressburg (1805) . With this it finally fell to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1814 .

In 1893 the city was connected to the railway network with the Grabfeldbahn . Königshofen had been a Bavarian district town and seat of a royal regional court since the beginning of the 19th century. The synagogue was desecrated during the November pogrom in 1938 and largely demolished after the war. On July 1, 1972, the Königshofen district was dissolved. On September 14, 1974, the city was elevated to a bath .

Incorporations

On January 1, 1972, the previously independent communities Gabolshausen, Ipthausen and Untereßfeld were incorporated. Eyershausen was added on April 1, 1972. Althausen followed on July 1, 1972. Merkershausen was incorporated on July 1, 1976. The series of incorporations was completed with the incorporation of Aub on May 1, 1978.
