history

Until the 18th century

The Franconian settlement of Sondheim was founded around 525. The first documentary mention took place in 789. Sondheim to 1335 was the most important place in Baringau and seat of cents court . In 1359 it was elevated to the status of town, but town charter was not exercised. Between 1230 and 1435 the place was subordinate to the Bishopric of Würzburg and then came to the Lichtenberg Office , which until 1548 belonged to the County of Henneberg -Römhild and from 1555 to various Ernestine duchies , most recently from 1741 to Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach .

19th and 20th centuries

From 1808 Sondheim was part of the Thuringian " exclave Ostheim".

In 1840, Sondheim was destroyed by a great fire . Formerly an office of the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach, the Ostheim exclave came to the newly founded Free State of Thuringia in 1920 . In 1945, Sondheim came from Thuringia to Bavaria through administrative assignment of the US military government. In 1978, Sondheim became a member of the Ostheim administrative community.

Due to the former rule of the country, the villages of this former exclave are still predominantly Protestant, in contrast to the Catholic surrounding areas .
