Several community-free forest areas border the municipality : Bürgerwald , Hundelshausen , Nonnenkloster , Vollburg and Wustvieler Forst .

Michelau is divided into eleven districts (former municipalities with their districts, the population in brackets as of 1987):
- Michelau (472) with Haudersmühle (8) and Saudrachshof (7)
- Altmannsdorf (82) with Neuhof (10)
- Hundelshausen (183) with Bimbachsmühle (3), Heinachshof (7) and the Zabelstein castle ruins (no official district)

The striking mountain cone of the Vollburg rises two kilometers to the east. Remains of stone walls suggest a vorgermanisch e height fortress out as "Volcburg" the springing near river Volkach and the folk field gave their names.
Incorporations
Before the territorial reform, Michelau belonged to the Gerolzhofen district . On July 1, 1970, the previously independent municipality of Prüßberg was incorporated. Altmannsdorf and Hundelshausen were added on May 1, 1978. In 1972 the Gerolzhofen district was dissolved and the Michelau community became part of the Schweinfurt district.

- Village analysis
In 2003, Michelau was the test subject of a so-called village analysis commissioned by the Diocese of Würzburg . For one week the way of life and conditions of the inhabitants of a small village as well as their wishes and prospects were researched. Based on these findings, the basis for the restructuring of the country pastoral should be developed.
