history

Eschenbach in the Upper Palatinate

Until the 19th century

Eschenbach was first mentioned as a market around 1150. The Wittelsbach rulership was only interrupted in the 14th century when it belonged to New Bohemia from 1353 to 1400. Emperor Karl IV granted Eschenbach town rights in 1358. In the 15th century Eschenbach came into possession of the Palatinate and later became part of the Electorate of Bavaria . The city was the seat of a maintenance office and belonged to the Amberg Rent Office of the Electorate of Bavaria. Eschenbach had a city court with its own magistrate rights.

20th and 21st centuries

Until the district reform , which came into force on July 1, 1972, the city was the seat of the district of Eschenbach in the Upper Palatinate . The Grafenwoehr military training area took up a large part of the area . Parts of the district now belong to Middle Franconia ( Neuhaus an der Pegnitz ), the Bayreuth district and, like the city of Auerbach , the Amberg-Sulzbach district . The majority was incorporated into the Neustadt district. With the district reform, the city lost the district office and other authorities.

On June 30, 2012, the Eschenbach Hospital of Kliniken Nordoberpfalz AG was closed after more than 100 years of activity.

Incorporations

In 1946 the previously independent community of Stegenthumbach and part of the community of Thomasreuth were incorporated. Part of Pichlberg followed on July 1, 1972.

To the east of the city center on Netzaberg, a new district was built by 2008: it was originally called Newtown, but for reasons of integration, the decision was made for Netzaberg. A total of 830 semi-detached and triple houses were built for US soldiers of the so-called Stryker Brigade (named after the lightly armed Stryker wheeled armored vehicles ) and their families. The neighborhood also got a kindergarten, a youth center, a sports center, a school and a building for prayer of all religious communities . It was one of the largest construction projects in Bavaria in recent decades. A total of 700 million US dollars was invested in the construction project. The US Army has rented the property for ten years with an option to extend the lease for a further five years. The population of Eschenbach is expected to increase by 3,500 soldiers (approx. 10,500 US citizens with families).
