history

Until the 19th century

Some evidence suggests that the place could have been a Carolingian bailiwick before 800 . The first documentary evidence as houeheim dates back to 1108 . An earlier foundation under the name Houfingen is also possible, because this is the name of the city in the older dialect of the area to this day, now mostly transformed into Hofingen in the city itself . There is also the dialect form Hoffinga , which is mainly used by the residents on the other side of the Haßberge. In any case, the Hofheim, located in a particularly fertile plain in front of the Haßberg heights, is one of the original parishes in this region and the patronage of the Catholic parish church of St. John the Baptist underscores its importance as a baptistery at least since Carolingian times. From 1500 Hofheim was part of the Franconian Empire . In 1576 the award was made to the town charter by Prince Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn . In the 18th century the Lendershäuser Tor and the Goßmannsdorfer Tor were rebuilt. In 1803 Hofheim came under Bavarian administration, from 1806 to 1814 it was under the Grand Duchy of Würzburg , after which it came back to Bavaria . Between 1862 and 1900 it was assigned to the royal district office of Königshofen , and from 1900 Hofheim was an independent district office. In 1892, the connection to the railway network was made possible from Haßfurt . According to data from the Society for Leprosy customer existed in Hofheim since 1597, a leprosarium , which was renewed 1664th

20th and 21st centuries

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue of the Jewish community at Kirchgasse 11 was looted by SA men , as a memorial plaque behind the town hall commemorates. The synagogue was preserved as a building and is now used as a residential building.

In the course of the Bavarian regional reform, the royal district office established in 1900, since 1938 district Hofheim in Mainfranken, after the war called district Hofheim in Unterfranken , was dissolved on July 1st, 1972. With this, Hofheim lost its importance as Haßfurt became the district town of the new Haßberge district.

The railway connection to Haßfurt was closed in 1995; the tracks were dismantled in 1996/97 and converted into a 15 kilometer long cycle path.

In the 1990s and 2000s, the vacancy rate of buildings in the Hofheim city center increased. In order to stop the associated decline of village structures, the municipality has not designated any new building areas since 2006. In addition, it is actively committed to the existing stock of old buildings: The municipality records all uninhabited buildings, markets them on a website and provides guidance on applying for funding . In 2008 the city of Hofheim and six neighboring communities founded the community alliance Hofheimer Land , which also aims to attract young families to live in Hofheim or in the surrounding villages and thus to reduce the population decline.

Incorporations

On January 1, 1972, the previously independent communities of Erlsdorf and Manau were incorporated. Sulzbach joined on January 1, 1974. The Ostheim market followed on January 1, 1975. The series of incorporations was completed with the incorporation of Eichelsdorf and Lendershausen on January 1, 1978 and Goßmannsdorf, Reckertshausen and Rügheim on May 1, 1978.
