Structure of Thuringia in municipalities, municipal associations and districts (as of December 31, 2019)

The German state of Thuringia consists of a total of

  • 634 politically independent municipalities (as of December 31, 2019).

These are distributed as follows:

  • 516 other municipalities, including
    • 059 independent municipalities (they carry out all tasks under their own responsibility - 16 of them are fulfilling municipalities),
    • 457 other municipalities.

389 municipalities have come together in 43 administrative communities to carry out their administrative business .

A specialty in Thuringia are fulfilling communities. 39 municipalities that do not belong to an administrative community are fulfilling municipalities for 96 other municipalities.

29 of the municipalities are referred to as rural municipalities . They can be cities at the same time.
