The German state of Brandenburg consists of a total of

  • 417 politically independent cities and municipalities (as of January 1, 2020).

These are distributed as follows:

31 cities and 240 municipalities have joined together to form 52 offices to handle their administrative business . 4 other cities have joined together to form a community, the first of its kind in Brandenburg.

In Brandenburg, cities with more than 45,000 inhabitants or 25,000 inhabitants received the status of a large or medium-sized city belonging to a district in accordance with Section 2, Paragraph 3 of the municipal code for the Land Brandenburg old version. With the introduction of the Brandenburg Municipal Constitution (BbgKVerf), the status of the Middle District City was abolished, but a grandfathering regulation was included in Section 141 (2) BbgKVerf. In addition, according to Section 1 (3) BbgKVerf, 35,000 inhabitants are now sufficient to achieve the status of a city belonging to a large district.

For officially bilingual cities and municipalities, the Lower Sorbian name is given in addition to the German name.
