The place is south of Eisenhüttenstadt near the Oder , which forms the state border with Poland here.

The alley village was first mentioned in 1316 with the Sorbian name (Ławojce).

Lawitz belonged to the Guben district in the province of Brandenburg since 1817 and to the Eisenhüttenstadt-Land district in the GDR district of Frankfurt (Oder) from 1952 . The community has been in the Oder-Spree district in Brandenburg since 1993.
