History and etymology

The village was first mentioned in 1285 as the Byrkenbrucke (birch bridge ) in a border document of the Fürstenwalde district . The river, which is called Hauptgraben in the 21st century, was mentioned several times as the boundary of the district. Elsewhere it was reported that the old military and trade route (also called freight route) ran through Berkenbrück from Berlin to Frankfurt (Oder). This old road probably led over a wooden bridge that connected the banks of the river. However, there is no reliable evidence that such a connection made of birch wood existed. However, archaeological excavations have shown that the area was already settled in the Stone Age. Further finds could be dated to the Bronze Age .

In the Thirty Years War the place fell desolate ; the survivors fled to the Oderbruch. Only after several years did farmers move to the village again. They built the village church in 1728 . Over the centuries, the spelling of the place name changed several times. Since 1775 the place has been called Berkenbrück, as is customary today. On October 22, 1842 the first train passed Berlin – Frankfurt (Oder) Berkenbrück at a speed of 30 km / h. In 1859 Berkenbrück got a station building and thus a stop. In 1909 a volunteer fire brigade was founded. Ten years later, Berkenbrück was connected to the electrical grid. The place experienced a modest upswing.

In 1932 the writer Hans Fallada moved to Berkenbrück, was arrested in 1933 and deported. The Berlin – Frankfurt (Oder) motorway was opened in 1937. The line leading past Berkenbrück is one of the main arteries in transit traffic between Western and Eastern Europe in the 21st century . During the Second World War , the place was hit several times by bombs. The SS maintained a rest home in the village. After the battle for the Seelow Heights , refugees also moved to Berkenbrück. On April 24th and 25th, 1945 the war in town ended with the occupation by the Red Army .

During the GDR era, a few holiday camps were set up in the village. Due to the proximity to Berlin and Frankfurt / Oder , the place also became interesting for weekend tourists. After the fall of the Wall , numerous new buildings were built, which increased the number of residents.

Berkenbrück belonged to the district of Lebus in the province of Brandenburg since 1817 and from 1952 to the district of Fürstenwalde in the GDR district of Frankfurt (Oder) . The community has been in the Oder-Spree district in Brandenburg since 1993.
