About this picture

The municipality of Bersteland is located in the Dahme-Spreewald district ( Brandenburg ) and is a member of the Unterspreewald office .

geography

The municipality is located in the east of the Baruther glacial valley on the river Berste . The Berste, which rises south of Luckau and turns east in Bersteland, flows into the Spree a few kilometers further in Lübben (Spreewald) . The area reaches 85 m above sea level near the district of Niewitz. NHN .

Community structure

Bersteland consists of the districts Freiwalde , Niewitz and Reichwalde and the inhabited part of the municipality Rickshausen.

history

Freiwalde and Niewitz belonged to the district of Lübben (Spreewald) in the province of Brandenburg since 1816 and to the district of Lübben in the GDR district of Cottbus from 1952 . Reichwalde in the Luckau district of the Brandenburg province became part of the Luckau district in 1952 , also in the Cottbus district.

Bersteland was created on February 1, 2002 from the voluntary amalgamation of the previously independent municipalities and today's districts of Freiwalde, Niewitz and Reichwalde.

Freiwalde district

Church in Freiwalde

The place appears for the first time in a document in 1345. The village church (rectangular neo-Gothic building) dates from 1871.

District Niewitz

Church in Niewitz

As for Freiwalde, 1345 is also the year of the earliest documented mention of Niewitz.

The well-preserved structure of a round settlement is of Wendish origin. The name of the place comes from the Lower Sorbian word nieva = fertile field.

Bricks were made in Niewitz until 1950, based on their material from the nearby clay pits.

Reichwalde district

Reichwalde (Lower Sorbian Rychwałd ) was first mentioned in 1170.

Built on a Wendish wall surrounded by swamps in the 12th / 13th centuries. In the 19th century, Mr. Strehle and Mr. Bieberstein built Reichwalde Castle . The castle was the center of a small aristocratic rule, the Reichwalde rule , which comprised eleven to thirteen villages around 1400. This was sold in 1414 and dissolved. The greater part went to the city of Luckau , a smaller part went to the Storkow rule (and later to the Storkow office ). The castle was demolished.
