geography
Brown coal field
The municipality is named after the Lusatian Lake District , which was created and is still being created by flooding the remaining opencast mining holes in the Lusatian lignite mining area. This process had a strong influence on the landscape and settlement structure in the region, as many former villages were excavated here. The Altdöberner See , Großräschener See , Sedlitzer See and Partwitzer See border the area of the municipality.

history
Bahnsdorf, Lindchen, Lubochow and Ressen belonged to the district of Calau from 1817–1952 (until 1947 in the Prussian province of Brandenburg , 1947–1952 in the state of Brandenburg ). By administrative reform in 1952 Bahnsdorf was in the district Senftenberg , the other three municipalities in the county Calau in the GDR - district Cottbus incorporated. 1990-1993 they belonged again to the state of Brandenburg. Since the district reform in 1993 , the four places have been in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district.
The municipality of New Zealand was created in the course of the Brandenburg municipal area reform on February 1, 2002 from the merger of the previously independent municipalities of Bahnsdorf, Lindchen, Lubochow and Ressen.
