geography
location
The city is located halfway between Ingolstadt and Regensburg , on an approximately 5 km wide gravel plain of the Danube Valley, which at this point is in the south of the wooded foothills of the tertiary Danube-Isar hill country of the Hallertau and in the north of the mainly limestone Slopes of the southern Franconian Alb is limited. In the urban area the rivers Ilm and Abens flow into the Danube .
City structure
The city has the following 22 municipal parts: Arresting , Bad Gögging , Deisenhofen , Eining , Geibenstetten , Haderfleck , Heiligenstadt , Hienheim , Irnsing , Irnsing-Steinbruch , Karpfenstein , Lina , Marching , Mauern , Mühlhausen , Neustadt adDonau, Niederulrain , Oberulrain , Schwaig , Sittling , Umbertshausen and Wöhr .
They are heavily influenced by agriculture, with asparagus and especially hops playing a special role.

history
Until the 19th century
The oldest settlement in the area of Neustadt, documented by written sources, existed with the place and the castle Trephenau . Still under the name Seligenstadt Neustadt was on 11 May 1273 by Duke Ludwig II. , Called the rigor , the city rights awarded. This city charter is the oldest in Bavaria . With the town elevation and the associated new development and settlement, Duke Ludwig II may have intended to secure the Danube Valley Road and secure the Danube crossing. The city charter is one of the planned city foundations of the early Wittelsbach dukes . Neustadt was first mentioned with this name in a document from Abbot Konrad von Weltenburg from 1277.
Older than the actual Neustadt is the settlement of Wöhr , located at the gates of the city and directly on the banks of the Danube , which is now still a district. Its name goes back to the Middle High German Wert , which means something like island or raised, water-free land. Wöhr was already incorporated into the city of Neustadt in the late Middle Ages . The residents of Wöhr could become citizens of the city, but lived outside the fortifications . The castle Wöhr was the headquarters of the noble family of the Lord of Wöhr and the ducal Urbar Office "ze will," the in kind and money donations managed from ducal estates.
20th and 21st centuries
In the course of its eventful history, often marked by war and destruction as well as by floods , Neustadt developed from a rural town into a commercial and industrial service center. Neustadt is now the economic center of the Kelheim district . The Neustadt “economic miracle” began in 1964 with the construction of the oil refinery and continued in the 1980s with the settlement of well-known automotive suppliers who benefit from the convenient location and proximity to Audi and BMW . With the expansion of Bad Göggings into a bathing and tourist resort , Neustadt received a second economic pillar during this period.
Due to the designation of commercial and residential areas and incorporations as part of the regional reform in Bavaria , the population grew from around 4,000 in 1972 to around 12,900 at the end of 2012. In the city area, 6,900 jobs subject to social insurance are offered, of which around 1,200 are in the spa town of Bad Goegging. The number of in-commuters significantly exceeds that of out-commuters.
The old town of Neustadt is still preserved in its historical core . With the exception of the south-eastern part, the so-called lions' den, it is typical of the founding of a city in Wittelsbach , largely characterized by its regular layout and square floor plan. The original settlement of Trephenau is believed to be in the lions' den. From the former city fortifications , some parts of the city wall, the moat wall systems and three towers have been preserved. The three city gates were demolished in the 19th century. During this time the city wall was planted so that the old town is now framed by a mighty avenue of chestnut trees. A green corridor was created that is unique of its kind. The nave of the Gothic parish church of St. Laurentius and the likewise Gothic town hall are worth seeing . The tower of the parish church was destroyed in the Second World War and replaced by a new building in the late 1940s.
Incorporations
In 1946, walls were incorporated into the city. Arresting, Eining and Marching came on January 1, 1972, Gögging on July 1, 1972, Geibenstetten, Irnsing, Mühlhausen and large parts of the dissolved community of Hienheim on January 1, 1978. The incorporation of the previously independent municipalities of Oberulrain and Schwaig completed the incorporation on May 1, 1978.
Population development
In the period from 1988 to 2018, the population increased from 9,813 to 14,409 by 4,596 inhabitants or 46.9%.
