history
The Münsterschwarzach monastery was founded before 788 as a nunnery and private monastery of the Carolingian ruling house. Schwarzach was the scene of the Battle of Schwarzach in 1554 , in which Margrave Albrecht Alcibiades of Brandenburg-Kulmbach was defeated. The city, which previously belonged to the Hochstift Würzburg and the Franconian Reichskreis , became part of Bavaria in the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss 1803.
On April 1, 1971, the previously independent communities of Hörblach, Schwarzenau and Stadtschwarzach merged to form the new community of Schwarzach am Main. On October 1, 1973, Düllstadt, Gerlachshausen and Münsterschwarzach were added.

coat of arms
Blazon : "In silver, a wide black sloping bar pointing to the left, covered with a notched flag embroidered with silver and red on a golden lance, accompanied on both sides by three red squares on each tip" | |
Founding of the coat of arms: The silver and red quartered flag of the Würzburg monastery in the coat of arms of the market Schwarzach comes from the coat of arms of the district Stadtschwarzach, which was mentioned in documents as early as 1230 and is still the center of the market today. The place received city rights early on, but gave it up in 1818 and became a market. The guided tour of Stadtschwarzach has been documented since the 14th century. In the shield of the seal there are two crossed crooks, the symbol of the Münsterschwarzach monastery, which at that time owned the local authority . In the 15th century the shield was split in the seal, the Würzburg Hochstift flag was in front, and the crossed crooks were in the back. Since 1531 the Hochstift Würzburg had the sole local rule. In seals of the 16th century, the shield is covered with a wide crossbar, which is shown in black in existing coats of arms. In the 17th century only the Hochstift flag was used in the coat of arms. The six red squares in today's coat of arms symbolize the districts that belong to Schwarzach. The black crossbar stands for the place name. The colors silver and red are the colors of Franconia . The coat of arms was awarded on August 22, 1983 by the government of Lower Franconia. |
