The Main Bridge Schwarzach am Main is a road bridge that spans the Main between the Schwarzach districts of Schwarzenau and Stadtschwarzach in Lower Franconia at river kilometer 298 . The structure has two lanes and a shared footpath and cycle path. A previous building that was inaugurated in 1890 was called Ludwigs-Brücke .

history

The history of the Main Bridge near Schwarzenau is closely linked to the historic ford, which has existed in the place since the early Middle Ages . Despite several relocations, the ford was later converted into a ferry station that mediated between Dettelbach / Schwarzenau and Münsterschwarzach / Stadtschwarzach. It connected a via regia between Würzburg and the Steigerwald . The ferry station was converted into a flying bridge during the Napoleonic Wars because soldiers often changed banks. → see also: Main ferry Schwarzenau

The construction of the first Main Bridge at this point goes back to the planning of a railway line between Dettelbach and Ebrach , which was promoted by those responsible from the 1880s. The city of Dettelbach in particular was interested in creating a permanent connection between the two banks of the Main, so that the city also took on the planning. On April 1, 1889, construction work began on the bridge that was to connect Schwarzenau to the south of the old Main ferry with the municipality of Hörblach , the area of which extended to the Main.

The city of Dettelbach hired several regional craftsmen for the bridge construction work. The abutments , the bridge piers and the customs house to be built on the bank were built by Friedrich Buchner from Würzburg for 68,000 marks . The Georg Noell company , also from Würzburg, contributed the iron superstructure for 128,000 marks. The bricklayers Georg Fehn from Bibergau and the Schneider brothers from Dettelbach received 53,000 marks and built the access roads.

On May 1, 1890, the bridge was opened to traffic. The Würzburg bishop Franz Joseph von Stein , who consecrated the building, was able to be won over for the inauguration. The namesake of the new bridge was King Ludwig II of Bavaria . A train never crossed the Ludwigs-Brücke, and the Dettelbach-Bahnhof -Dettelbach-Stadt-Ebrach railway was never built. The new bridge was still a bottleneck because there was no other bridge on the Main between Kitzingen and Schweinfurt . The stone Volkacher Mainbrücke did not follow until 1892.

In the last days of the Second World War, the Wehrmacht tried to stop the advancing Americans crossing the Main and blew up the river bridges. On April 5, 1945 the Schwarzach Ludwigsbrücke was blown up by the soldiers. In the period that followed, a provisional ferry service was set up again, operated by the fisherman Martin Weichsel. The bridge could already be repaired in 1946.

The old bridge existed for almost ten years. Only the construction work on the main channel Volkach-Gerlachshausen and the straightening of Maine by the construction of the barrage Dettelbach in the 1950s could raise the river level. Those responsible were faced with the choice of lifting the structure or building a new bridge. In 1957, construction began on the new bridge approx. 500 meters downstream; it was completed in autumn 1958.

Bridge from 1890

The bridge from 1890 had four stone pillars that were attached to the Main. Above that there was a steel structure. The bridge was built as a railway bridge and carriages and cabs had to pay a fee at the customs house on the Schwarzenau side for the crossing .

Bridge from 1958

The new bridge was built as a steel beam bridge with a length of 210 meters and a clear width of 84 meters. The state road 2450 now leads over the bridge, though erroneously to the long lasting state road 22 is spoken.
