Sulzdorf an der Lederhecke (officially Sulzdorf adLederhecke ) is a municipality in the Lower Franconian district of Rhön-Grabfeld and a member of the Bad Königshofen im Grabfeld community .

geography

The community is located in the Main-Rhön region . The place borders directly on the Free State of Thuringia ( Heldburg and Schweickershausen in the Hildburghausen district ).

Community structure

The municipality consists of six districts, in which ten settlements are distributed:

There are the districts Obereßfeld, Schwanhausen, Serrfeld, Sternberg im Grabfeld, Sulzdorf an der Lederhecke and Zimmerau.

history

Surname

The name refers to a wooded strip of a few km in length, which was called the leather hedge and which represented the border to the Saxon and later Thuringian areas. There are several theories for the meaning of “leather hedge”, including “muddy water” or “pasture forest”.

Until the church is planted

In 1199 Heinrich von Sternberg from the family of the Counts von Henneberg built a castle at the foot of the "Sterinbercs". In 1695 the barons von Guttenberg bought the property around Sternberg Castle .

In Sulzdorf an der Lederhecke the Reformation was introduced around 1555 by the Truchsesse von Wetzhausen . Evangelical preaching is said to have taken place there since 1537. From 1628 to 1649 the place was temporarily Catholic again due to the Counter Reformation .

Sulzdorf was part of the manor of the Barons von Guttenberg, which was mediated by the Grand Duchy of Würzburg of Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany in 1806 and with this fell to Bavaria in 1814 . In 1818 the political municipality was established.

Sternberg training camp

From 1933 to 1945, the Sternberg SA training camp was located in the castle .

Incorporations

On April 1, 1971, the previously independent community of Schwanhausen was incorporated. Obereßfeld was added on January 1, 1973. Serrfeld, Sternberg im Grabfeld and Zimmerau followed on January 1, 1978.

From 2008 until his death in September 2010, Walter Krug (CSU) was mayor of the community. Angelika Götz decided the new election in December 2010 clearly for herself. coat of arms

Coat of arms Sulzdorf Lederhecke.png

Blazon :

"In gold over a lowered beam set in two rows of red and silver, a red-armored and red-tongued black lion's body, holding a silver sword in its paws, top left by a blue shield with a gold heraldic rose inside."

The lion comes from a community seal that has been documented since 1731 and shows a lion with a sword. It is possible that this seal, which was used until the 19th century, goes back to the family coat of arms of the Bamberg prince-bishop Friedrich Karl von Schönborn, who ruled in 1731.

Selected coats of arms of noble families, which were important for the community area, refer to the history of the formerly independent communities Obereßfeld, Schwanhausen, Serrfeld, Stemberg and Zimmerau, which were part of Sulzdorf: The coat of arms colors gold and black are reminiscent of the Counts of Henneberg, the heraldic rose of the Barons von Guttenberg and finally the beam to the Truchsessen von Wetzhausen.

The great support from the population, from local residents, farmers and hunting tenants as well as from politics have made the Grabfeld rally the automobile rally event with the most participants in Germany. 10,000 spectators and a record number of over 250 starters from Germany and abroad flocked to the anniversary event in summer 2013 alone, making the "Grabfeld" one of the largest motorsport events of its kind in Europe.
