history

It is believed that the village was founded in the 6th to 7th centuries by the Alamanni as Bechenheim . The name probably goes back to the Alemannic founder, as the word means to the home of a bacho . The first written mention of the name goes back to 1269/71 and was already mentioned there with the addition to the Brenz . The name Bächingen replaced the original term in the 19th century.

As the first rulers of the place, the lords of Riedheim are documented in the 15th century , from whom he came into the hands of the knight family von Westernach . Bernhard von Westernach had today's moated castle built in 1531 . His son Eitelhans († 1576) managed to spin off Bächingen from the Principality of Palatinate-Neuburg as a free imperial knighthood and introduced the Reformation in 1576 .

West side of the castle

In 1594 the rule passed to the Barons vom Stain , who later also received the neighboring free imperial knighthood of Niederstotzingen and ruled in Bächingen until 1790. Under their patronage , the Church of St. Nicholas , built in the early 15th century, underwent major changes and extensions.

From the Thirty Years' War Bächingen was not spared. Especially under the Bavarian Army , it suffered great damage in 1620, as did the surrounding towns. Due to Bächingen's imperial immediacy and the popularity of the Freiherren vom Stain , who ran a small farm in Bächingen based on the French model and maintained connections in the highest circles, Bächingen became a refuge for citizens of surrounding villages towards the end of the war. After the war, immigrants, in the case of Bächingen mostly Wenden , filled the gaps in the population.

In 1790 the Duchess Franziska von Württemberg, better known as Franziska von Hohenheim , bought the Bächingen estate as a private property. The Duchess's grandmother was Sophia Charlotta Baroness von Vohenstein, née Freiin vom Stain from Bächingen.

In the course of mediatization , Bächingen was incorporated into the newly formed Kingdom of Bavaria in 1806 and lost its autonomy.

After the duchess's death in 1811, her universal heir was Karl Ludwig Axel Freiherr von Böhnen Bächingen, who made it a patrimonial court . In 1821 he sold the village to the newly ennobled Johann Gottlieb Freiherr von Süsskind , a wealthy banker from Augsburg . His descendant Albrecht Freiherr von Süßkind-Schwendi and his wife Christine, daughter of Prince Friedrich Christian zu Schaumburg-Lippe , still own the castle estate today.

After the Second World War had left Bächingen largely untouched, the place felt it in full force on April 24, 1945. American low-level aircraft attacks killed a number of people and around a third of the houses burned down.

nature

In the south of the Bächinger district lies a part of the Swabian Donaumoos with protected flora and fauna.

Bächingen is also known for its storks , which since 1989 after years of absence have settled back on a chimney in Bächingen Castle; For many years it was the only pair of storks in the district of Dillingen , until a couple made their home in Höchstädt in the late 1990s . The storks made the village in the Brenztal a little famous in 1997 when they did not move south for the first time and spent the winter in Bächingen, which is now the case every year.

There is a natural monument to the north behind the castle. There are still remnants of the former castle avenue.
