history

Until the 19th century

Even before the city was founded, several mills were built on the Pegnitz, which flows there with a steep gradient . The settlement, which emerged in the 11th century, was elevated to the status of a city under Emperor Charles IV as part of his New Bohemian territory in 1355. He also had the Wenzelschloss with its unique coat of arms hall built on a Pegnitz island off the coast, probably on Staufer foundations .

After the collapse of the New Bohemian rule, Lauf came under the rule of the Landshut line of the House of Wittelsbach as a Bavarian office. In 1504, during the Landshut War of Succession , the imperial city of Nuremberg was able to secure control of Lauf as an ally of the Munich line of the Wittelsbach family. During the Second Margrave War , Lauf was captured twice by the troops of the Margrave of Brandenburg-Kulmbach Albrecht Alcibiades and set on fire on June 3, 1553. In 1806 Lauf became part of the new Kingdom of Bavaria and became the seat of various offices and courts.

The city was already economically important in pre-industrial times. In addition to mills, there were also hammer mills on the Pegnitz . In the 16th century the hammer mill was owned by Heinrich Ayrer (1481–1554), who sold the factory in 1534. Industrialization took place in Lauf around 1870.

20th century

As part of the regional reform , the city expanded through incorporations. Today Lauf is the largest municipality and district seat of the greatly enlarged district of Nürnberger Land, which has been created since 1972. Before that, Lauf was the seat of the district of Lauf an der Pegnitz .

coat of arms

The oldest seal in the city of Lauf dates from the middle of the 14th century. It shows two towers and the city wall and in between the small arms of the kings of Bohemia, who owned the city at that time. Since then this arrangement has remained the same, only the small coat of arms was replaced by the coat of arms of the new rulers. When the dukes of Bavaria acquired the city in 1473, the Bohemian lion was replaced by the diamonds of the Wittelsbach family. In 1504 Lauf became the property of the city of Nuremberg. Since then, the small Nuremberg coat of arms has been on the shield.

Partner municipality and twin cities

Lauf maintains partnerships with the French Brive-la-Gaillarde , the Swedish Nyköping , the Greek Drama and the Upper Palatinate Tirschenreuth . Furthermore, since 2015 the cities of Lauf and Loket have been linked by a memorandum for exchange and cultural cooperation.

Culture and sights

Theaters and museums

Dehnberger Hof Theater

The Dehnberger Hof Theater is located in an old hop farm in the Dehnberg district . In the lavishly renovated property, in-house productions as well as guest performances by national stage greats are performed. There are also concerts from classical music, jazz and other genres. In addition to this venue, there is a small theater called Glückserei on the market square, which offers numerous in-house productions.

The Lauf industrial museum was set up below the old town and shows the life and work of urban workers and craftsmen from around 1890 to around 1970.

Buildings

In the area of the historic market square, the two city gates are very well preserved, as are some beautifully renovated half-timbered houses and the old town hall. The steeple of St. John's Church , which is also located inside the historic old town, is visible from afar . Also noteworthy are individual side streets with half-timbered ensembles, mills, Jewish tower and remains of the former city wall, as well as parts of the former hospital with church ruins from the 14th century. Rock cellars were created under most of the properties on the market square. These go back to the 15th century and were initially used as shelters and later as storage and beer cellars . After the Second World War, they were forgotten until they were restored towards the end of the 20th century by dedicated owners in collaboration with the city and the Altstadtfreunde Lauf association. The association organizes guided tours through these cellars on request.

The Lauf Castle , one located on an island in the river water castle , built by Charles IV. 1356-1360 as a stopover of the Golden Road between Nuremberg and Prague . The complex rises above a slightly warped triangular floor plan. The passage through the castle is open in the summer months from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and the castle has been available for weddings since summer 2014.

The historical water supply, which was built in 1907 in the Tauchersreuth district, is a technical feature.

traffic

Lauf has been part of the Nuremberg S-Bahn network since 1987

Lauf has had three train stations since joining the transport association for the greater Nuremberg area : The Lauf train station (Pegnitz on the left) was opened in 1859 by the Bayerische Ostbahnen AG on the route from Nuremberg via Amberg and Schwandorf to Regensburg . In 1877, the Lauf train station was added on the right side of the Pegnitz (Pegnitz on the right) on the route via Schnabelwaid to Bayreuth and towards Marktredwitz and Eger . With the opening of the Nuremberg S-Bahn in 1987, the Lauf West stop was created on the "left Pegnitz line". Since December 2010 the S-Bahn line 1 has been running both via Hersbruck (left Pegnitz) to Hartmannshof and via Nürnberg Hbf to Bamberg . The train station on the right of the Pegnitz is the stopping point for the regional trains R3 to Neuhaus (Pegnitz) and R31 to Simmelsdorf-Hüttenbach . The "right Pegnitz line" has not yet been electrified. According to the Transport Investment Report 2012, electrification is planned, but without a specific date.

In addition to the rail connection, Lauf has several city bus routes that connect all parts of the town with the city center and the train stations.

With the Autobahn junctions Lauf / Hersbruck and Lauf of the BAB 9 Munich  - Nuremberg - Berlin , the city is connected to the trunk road network. The junction Lauf / Hersbruck (No. 49, formerly Lauf-Nord) is about one kilometer east of the city. The Lauf junction (No. 50, formerly Lauf-Süd) is located directly on the Laufer industrial area in the southern part of the city. The route between the two junctions is signposted as a bypass of the federal highway 14 Nuremberg - Hersbruck and thus replaces the B 14 in the urban area of Lauf.

The Franconian Marienweg leads through Lauf an der Pegnitz .
