Surname

etymology

Wall at the entrance to the village

Erlenbach got its name from an Erlenbach of the same name flowing nearby. It is not known exactly where it runs, as it probably bears a different name today. Because Wörth am Main was originally also called Erlenbach, the eponymous brook can also be on the other side of the Main. Today's addition on the Main distinguishes Erlenbach from other places of the same name.

Earlier spellings

Earlier spellings of the place from various historical maps and documents:

  • 1229 Erlebach
  • 1236 Erlbach
  • 1248 Erlebach
  • 1259 Erelbach
  • 1275 Erlenbach
  • 1521 Erlenbach am Main

history

Erlenbach in Paul Pfinzing's Spessart map from 1594 (north is on the right)

Until the church is planted

When the region was taken over by humans is in the dark of history. In 1876, four burial mounds from the Bronze Age (around 1550-1250 BC) were discovered. In 1981 two typical urn graves from around 1000–800 BC were found. Found.

In the first century of our era, the Roman Empire reached as far as the Main. The wet Limes , the eastern part of the Upper German-Raetian Limes , was secured with forts . In order to avoid the Romans, the Germanic tribes relocated their settlement area to the east on the opposite right side of the Main. When the Roman Empire fell apart, it would be many years before the Franks penetrated the mainland in 531 and established settlements for their part.

The first Erlenbacher Höfe were probably only built between 800 and 950 AD.

Around the year 1183, Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa awarded the town of Erlenbach " market justice " (according to legend, this was done out of gratitude because an attack planned by Erlenbach's citizens would have been prevented). The imperial distinction was visually expressed with a market and freedom symbol. It shows a large cross with a rooster on top. On one side of the crossbeam there is a hand, on the other side, pointing downwards, a sword is attached. The hand pointing upwards made it clear that the residents of the town of Erlenbach were under the special protection of the emperor and that anyone who violated this had to expect to be judged with the ruler's sword.

In 1629 Margarete Diepolt from Erlenbach was executed as a supposed witch.

In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

Effects of industrial settlement

In 1917 (final approval of the settlement in 1918) the shipyard relocated from the Wörther Mainufer to the Erlenbacher side. In 1926 the synthetic fiber works ( Vereinigte Glanzstoff-Fabriken AG ) north of the city followed (see Economy ). This led to an influx of foreign workers. In 1937, a “settlement model house” was built north-west of the old town and the railway line - one kilometer away from the local development at the time . In the period that followed, a settlement with uniform, simple half-timbered houses emerged. (Documentation and photo archive). 102 houses were built in this way by 1942 (analysis of the National Socialist settlement program). The Second World War interrupted the construction of the settlement, but construction activity was resumed as early as 1947, as over 1,000 refugees and displaced persons came to Erlenbach. Even today, the core of the settlement is still preserved as a closed building ensemble. In the aftermath of the economic miracle, the Glanzstoffwerke recruited numerous, mainly Turkish, guest workers , whose descendants now constitute a large group of the city's population. The comparatively high proportion of foreigners in Erlenbach of almost 20% can also be explained by the large group of Russian Germans who moved to Erlenbach, especially after the collapse of the Eastern Bloc .

Administrative history

In 1862 the district office of Obernburg was formed, on whose administrative territory Erlenbach lay. As everywhere in the German Reich , the term district was introduced in 1939. Erlenbach was now one of the 35 communities in the district of Obernburg am Main . With the dissolution of the district of Obernburg, Erlenbach came to the newly formed district of Miltenberg on July 1, 1972 .

Incorporations

The previously independent and agricultural neighboring communities Mechenhard (on January 1, 1976) and Streit (on May 1, 1978) were incorporated.

On August 1, 2008, the municipality-free area of Hohe Berg was incorporated.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Erlenbach am Main
Blazon : “In gold, a red crowned and gold armed black double-headed eagle holding a red imperial orb with a gold cross on the right and a red sword on the left; floating above it is a red lined elector's hat with ermine trimmings, golden temples, orb and cross. "

The coat of arms newly awarded to Markt Erlenbach am Main in 1953 is based on two seals that the Erlenbach village court demonstrably carried in the period from 1722 to 1810 and whose images corresponded. Both seals showed a crowned double-headed eagle holding the imperial orb with a cross in the right claw and a sword in the left claw . An elector's hat floated over the eagle's heads . Below the eagle heads were the letters E and B (Erlenbach).

Town twinning

Saint-Maurice-Platz in Erlenbach

Erlenbach am Main maintains partnerships with the French Saint-Maurice , Département Val-de-Marne , the Swiss Erlenbach on Lake Zurich in the canton of Zurich and since June 2012 with the Swiss Erlenbach in the Simmental .

Cultural

Religions

There are four Catholic churches in the city:

  • St. Peter and Paul , located in the old town near the Main. The church has Gothic roots that go back to the 15th century. After a profound expansion in 1966, the church was last renovated in 2017. The church is known for its organ from the Albiez company from 1985 (completed by Orgelbau Vleugels ), which with its 43 stops is regularly used for organ concerts by top performers.
  • St. Josef (settlement). Due to the constant influx of workers from the neighboring Glanzstoff factories and numerous expellees from war, the desire arose for another church, which was built in 1954 north of the railway line. The plans come from Albert Boßlet and Erwin van Aaken . The church holds more than 600 believers and has a 4-part bronze bell made by Otto , Bremen (plenary bell)
  • St. Josef (district of Mechenhard)
  • St. Karl Borromäus (district of Streit)

The four formerly independent parishes were merged in 2009 to form the parish community of Christ, the Vine .

The local Protestant Christians visit the Martin Luther Church , a hall church from 1956. The wall mosaic by Josef Reissl is worth seeing here.

Since January 2007 there is also a prayer room of the Evangelical Free Church of Erlenbach .

There is also the Islamic community since 1965, a mosque of DITIB .

Club life

In Erlenbach and its districts Streit and Mechenhard there is a lively club life in cultural, sporting and other areas.

The largest clubs are the Turnverein Erlenbach 1905 e. V. with 650–700 members, which offers offers in the areas of dance, gymnastics, gymnastics, handball and volleyball, as well as the Erlenbach 1919 e. V. with around 600 members. The SV Erlenbach is a football club; his first team played non-stop in the Bayernliga Nord between 2012 and 2018. With the 2018/19 season, the SVE team was relegated to the Landesliga Nordwest (after relegation). With the DJK Erlenbach 1956 e. V. the city also has a table tennis club. The tennis club TC Schwarz-Gold Erlenbach e. V. trains on six courts in the forest north of Erlenbach, not far from the sports field of SV Erlenbach .

There are numerous other large and small sports groups. In the cultural field, for example, the Erlenbach 1948 e. V. should be mentioned, who organizes a large choir performance once a year, for example the performance of Brahms ' German Requiem in 2017 .

There are voluntary fire brigades in all three districts (Erlenbach-Stadt, Streit, Mechenhard) , with the Erlenbach-Stadt fire brigade alone having 190 members.

Theater and film

The cultural life in Erlenbach has many faces. The renovated Frankenhalle provides the stage for theater , musicals and concerts . Another cultural enrichment is the “Kino-Passage”, which has been established as an art house cinema since 1979 and has repeatedly received awards for its excellent program selection. Finally, we should not forget the many festivals and markets that are also part of cultural life, for example the annual wine festival on the second weekend in July or the Erlenbach Advent calendar , where the facade of the town hall is converted into an oversized Advent calendar.

Viticulture

Even if the Romans probably brought the grapevine to the Main Valley, viticulture in Erlenbach was first documented 1000 years later in a document dated January 2, 1261. Erlenbach has been on the Franconian red wine hiking trail since 1990 . The location is characterized by its warm microclimate and the typical terrace slopes made of red sandstone . Numerous full-time and part-time vintners grow wine, including Pinot Noir and Portuguese, but also Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner and Riesling. In addition to the annual wine festival, seasonal hacking taverns offer local products for tasting.

Architectural monuments

In the forest between Erlenbach and Elsenfeld, remains of bunkers and gun positions of the so-called Wetterau-Main-Tauber position can be found as relics of the Second World War . After the Second World War, the bunkers were blown up by American troops .

Economy, infrastructure and education

economy

In the 20th century, the chemical industry was the driving force behind Erlenbach's urban development. The so-called Glanzstoffwerke, established in 1924 in the still very rural area for the production of viscose yarn , subsequently developed into a magnet for workers. After various entrepreneurial changes and crises, the location now operates as Industrie Center Obernburg (ICO) , although the company complex is located in Erlenbacher (and parts of Elsenfeld). According to figures from 2012, around 3000 people are employed at the site. With its wide range of manufactured or processed synthetic fibers (viscose, nylon, polyester ...) the location is a specialty. Resident companies are, for example, ENKA (textile viscose), Cordenka (technical viscose, also known as rayon ), PHP Fibers (nylon yarns for e.g. airbags , polyester threads e.g. for seat belts ). In addition to associated companies such as analytical laboratories, testing and calibration companies, non-industrial companies have now also settled in the location, for example BKK Akzo Nobel (health insurance company) and Degussa Bank . The typically sweet viscose smell, a mixture of hydrogen sulfide and carbon disulfide , was a trademark of all neighboring communities of the ICO, but has been greatly reduced due to improved immission control (new 88 m high exhaust air chimneys).

Landmarks of the ICO that can be seen from afar are the 186 m high reinforced concrete chimney and the three 110 m high steel chimneys of the power plant. The on-site power plant has a thermal output of 300 MW (conventional crude oil and natural gas boilers) + 194 MW (combined cycle steam turbine) and generates electricity for the site and the public network as well as process steam and heat. The electrical output is 100 MW.

In the industrial area "Im Fluss", which was created in the early 2000s between the ICO location and the city of Erlenbach, the Hemmelrath Lackfabriken company has set up a branch in addition to various service and craft businesses.

The traditional company " Erlenbacher Schiffswerft " is also worth mentioning . The shipyard can look back on a history since 1668 and has been at its current location south of the old town since 1917. The shipyard has been run as a family-owned operating company since 1997 and has specialized in repairs and ship conversions. It operates the only slipway system on the Cologne - Linz route.

Infrastructure

The station Erlenbach (Main) is located on the railway line Aschaffenburg-Miltenberg . The Glanzstoffwerke station at the level of the Obernburg Industry Center is also in the Erlenbach district. The Main Valley Railway crosses the Main on a steel bridge between Erlenbach and Wörth. State road 2309 runs through the village . With road bridges in Elsenfeld and Klingenberg, Erlenbach is connected to the federal highway 469 , which runs on the left Main from Miltenberg in the direction of Aschaffenburg and connects the upper center with the Rhine-Main area. North of Erlenbach, at the Main river kilometer 107, there is a protected sport boat harbor, which is operated by the Erlenbacher Wassersportclub e. V. is operated.

In addition to local general practitioners and specialists, Erlenbach is the location of the Helios Klinik Erlenbach, a hospital providing basic and standard care with almost 300 beds. The former district hospital was initially sold to Rhön-Klinikum AG in 2005, which after renovation sold the house together with 42 other clinics to Helios by 2011.

Erlenbach maintains a public outdoor pool, the Erlenbach mountain swimming pool on the southern outskirts. After major water losses through cracks occurred in the tiled 50-m pool, the city council decided to undertake a comprehensive renovation, which was completed in 2017 after two years of construction. In the course of the renovation, the outdoor pool was optically upgraded (50 m stainless steel pool, wave slide, children's area ...) and brought up to date in terms of energy.

The city's large triple gymnasium, the Barbarossahalle next to the middle school of the same name, was renovated and optically upgraded in 2017. The ailing gym of the TV Erlenbach is to be replaced by a new building.

education

The local primary school is for a CEO of Glanzstoffwerke (see Economy) the name Dr. Ernst Hellmut Vits School . The school has a focus on inclusion and offers all-day care.

The local middle school (formerly Hauptschule) is called Barbarossaschule and offers a middle school . In the 2016/17 school year, the school moved from an old building from the 1960s / 1970s to a new school building a few meters away. The old building was abandoned and demolished because an energetic renovation was not considered profitable and the building was oversized for the current number of students. The new building was carried out as a PPP project ; the general contractor was Goldbeck from Bielefeld , which operates the infrastructure for the first 25 years. The cost of the new building was EUR 9.5 million.

The local grammar school, the Hermann-Staudinger-Gymnasium Erlenbach am Main , is currently undergoing a serious renovation in which the old building from 1967 is being completely renovated and expanded. The grammar school offers a mathematical-natural science (NTG) and an economics branch (WSG-W) for its currently around 800 students, open and bound all-day care and has developed through sporting (cooperation with the handball performance center Großwallstadt), technical ( Robot construction) and social activities (project “Encounter of Generations”) acquired a good reputation.

The Erlenbach am Main city library is located at the train station and offers free loan of around 20,000 media.

The local adult education center VHS Erlenbach is used by up to 6000 people annually.

The local music school has existed since 1981 and in 2016 taught around 200 students how to play an instrument.
