Markberg Cross

Markberg Cross

North of Schönau, the Markberg Cross, which is already visible from the B 279, has been located on the 425 meter high Markberg since 1965. The first 19 meter high Markberg cross was made of spruce and was replaced in 1973 by a cross of the same height made of larch wood because of its poor condition. In 1998 this was replaced by the 23-meter-high Markberg Cross, which still exists today, the crossbeam of which is covered with a protective copper veneer. The Markberg Cross was financed by the Kolping Family, which also holds the Markberg Festival on the second Sunday in September, one of the most popular regular events in Schönau an der Brend at the foot of the Markberg Cross.
