Heinrich Christian Funck

Heinrich Christian Funck (born November 22, 1771 in Wunsiedel , † April 14, 1839 in Gefrees ) was a German pharmacist , botanist and co-founder of the Regensburg Botanical Society . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Funck ".

Life

His mother, née Schmidt from Wunsiedel, married to the Chamber Secretary Funck zu St. Johannis near Bayreuth , gave birth to Heinrich Christian after separating from her husband in their native city of Wunsiedel. Already in the 1880s she married the local pharmacist Daniel in Gefrees. Her son moved with her and shortly afterwards to Hof to attend high school there.

He then went to Regensburg to train as a pharmacist. There Arnulf Längenfell was his first teacher in the natural sciences. His botanical studies took him to Salzburg in 1794 and to Jena in 1798, after a stopover in Erlangen. Funk took over the pharmacy in Gefrees, which had previously belonged to his mother, on September 29, 1803, and from there he continued his research in cryptography and bryology . First in the Fichtelgebirge , which is on the doorstep, and later with further trips.

The offer to accept a professorship in Berlin would have meant leaving the Fichtelgebirge in 1821, so he turned it down with the words:

"It's my paradise, it would be a sin to go away "

- Heinrich Christian Funck

He was mayor of Gefrees for 13 years.

He sold the pharmacy in the 1830s and built a house with the intention of devoting himself only to science. He suffered a stroke one year after its completion and died in 1839 after a re- apoplexy .
