Heinrich Ernst Bindseil

Heinrich Ernst Bindseil (born May 22, 1803 in Nöschenrode , † November 26, 1876 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German librarian and historian.

Life

The son of a master bricklayer had attended the Lyceum Wernigerode in 1814 and the secondary school in Halle (Saale) in 1822. He then began studying theology and philology at the University of Halle-Wittenberg and was awarded a doctorate in philosophy. From Michaelmas 1829 until Easter 1837 he worked as an assistant teacher at the Latin secondary school in Halle. Michaelis in 1840 he became deputy secretary, Michaelis in 1842 secretary, from August 4, 1847 sub-librarian of the university library in Halle . He was honored for meritorious historical work in the Reformation field on October 22, 1855 by a handwritten letter from King Friedrich Wilhelm IV and by being awarded the gold medal for science.

On January 9, 1856 he was appointed associate professor at the University of Halle-Wittenberg and on October 5, 1863 he received the red eagle order, 4th class. In 1863 he was given the honor of being invited as a guest of honor to the laying of the foundation stone of the Melanchthon monument by King Wilhelm in Wittenberg , where his writings relating to the reformers were inserted into the foundation stone of the monument. After Gottfried Bernhardy's death , Bindseil was entrusted with the administration of the position of senior librarian at the university library. However, he could no longer fully fulfill the task assigned to him. He fell ill a year later and died.

Bindseil was a member of the German Oriental Society, a member of the historical-theological society in Leipzig and a member of the African Institute in Paris. Through his research, which was particularly related to the time of the Reformation, Bindseil had earned merit. Above all, his critical studies of the Lutheran Bible translation, the edition of Luther's table speeches and his publications in volumes 16 to 28 of the Corpus Reformatorum should be mentioned here.
