Heinrich Ernst Kromer

Heinrich Ernst Kromer (born September 26, 1866 in Riedern am Wald , municipality of Ühlingen-Birkendorf , district of Waldshut; † May 5, 1948 in Constance ) was a German writer , painter and sculptor .

Life

Heinrich Ernst Kromer came from the marriage of the Black Forest farmer's son and later gold digger Dorus Kromer and the daughter of the mayor of Riedern am Wald. He had four sisters. After graduating from high school in Konstanz, he studied in Heidelberg and Munich, but never graduated. From 1890 he worked as a writer and painter, inspired by contacts with the Munich art scene and the Gottlieber artist colony around Emanuel von Bodman and artists such as Richard Dehmel , René Schickele , Wilhelm von Scholz , Rainer Maria Rilke , Ludwig Finckh , Ludwig Klages and Hermann Hesse , later also Thomas Mann .

In 1893, Kromer published his first author's work “Looking and Building”. He became known with the novels "Arnold Lohr's Zigeunerfahrt" (1913) and "Gustav Hänfling's Memories of a Porcelain Painter" (1915). He also wrote articles in the newspapers Der Zeitgenosse , Simplicissimus , Wiener Rundschau , Deutsche Heimat , Die Freistatt - magazine for culture and school policy , Über Land und Meer , Die Kunst , Die Rheinlande . He was editor of Stern's literary bulletin of Switzerland in Zurich.

He was also active as a painter, later as a sculptor and potter.

Kromer's artistic estate was kept in the former princely castle of Bonndorf , now in the archives of the Waldshut district; A permanent exhibition is dedicated to him in the provost office of St. Leodegar in Ühlingen-Birkendorf. In 1991 the Heinrich Ernst Kromer Society was founded in Riedern am Wald, which is dedicated to the artist's work. Kromer is the namesake of "Heinrich-Ernst-Kromer-Straße" in his place of birth, Ühlingen-Birkendorf. An edition of the work has been published in eight volumes since 2006, edited by Jürgen Glocker and Klaus Isele, in which one volume is published annually.
