Heinrich Henkel (musician)

Martin Georg Heinrich Henkel (born February 16, 1822 in Fulda ; † April 10, 1899 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German music teacher , pianist and composer .

Life

Heinrich Henkel was born the son of the Fulda cantor and composer Michael Henkel . He was first taught by his father, later he received piano lessons from Aloys Schmitt and Ferdinand Keßler. He was trained in music theory by Johann Anton André , in whose publishing archive he also cataloged the manuscripts of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , which is considered important preparatory work for the Köchel directory . In Leipzig, Henkel studied with Julius Knorr and Ignaz Moscheles in 1846/47 .

In 1860 in Frankfurt am Main he founded a music school together with Johann Christian Hauff and others, the predecessor of today's city music school. In 1883 he was appointed Royal Prussian Music Director and in 1890 an honorary doctorate from the University of Marburg.
