Henry IV (bar)

Heinrich IV. (* 1315/20; † December 24, 1344 ) was Count von Bar from 1336 to 1344. He was the son of Count Edward I from the Scarponnois family and Maria von Burgund from the Elder House of Burgundy .

biography

He is mentioned for the first time in 1323, a second time in 1329, when his father tried to marry him to a daughter of John of Bohemia . When Count Edward I died in 1336, Heinrich IV refused to give Duke Rudolf von Lothringen the feudal oath for those of his lords who were under Lorraine, whereupon Rudolf devastated the area around Pont-à-Mousson , Heinrich's property, in 1337 . In return, Heinrich plundered the west of the duchy, whereupon Rudolf attacked the Barrois . It required the intervention of the French King Philip VI. to end the war.

When King Edward III. of England threatened to invade France in 1339, Henry joined Philip's army. The threat ended with a treaty in 1340 - and led to a resurgence of fighting with Rudolf in the Neufchâteau area ; Philipp had to intervene again to end the conflict.

When the King of England threatened the end of the armistice in 1344, Henry IV, as the Englishman's cousin, was one of those nobles - next to Duke John of Normandy , Philip's heirs, Duke Odo IV of Burgundy - who belonged to Pope Clement VI. were sent to Avignon to enforce a new treaty. However, an epidemic forced the embassy to leave the city. Heinrich had already been infected, however, in July he left the others, in October he arrived in Vincennes , and on December 24, 1344 he died.
