Heinrich Rauchinger (born January 1, 1858 in Krakow , Austria-Hungary ; † August 19, 1942 in the Theresienstadt concentration camp ) was an Austrian portrait and history painter .

life and work

Rauchinger studied at the Art Academy in Krakow with Jan Matejko and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under August Eisenmenger and Christian Griepenkerl . A scholarship enabled him to spend two years in Italy in 1886, especially in Rome, where he completed his education and made numerous landscape studies. From 1888 he lived as a freelance artist in Vienna and developed into a portrait painter. In 1899 he became a member of the “Cooperative of Fine Artists Vienna” (later: “ Society of Fine Artists Austria, Künstlerhaus ”).

He has received many awards. In 1904 he received the Schützenjubiläumpreis of the Künstlerhaus, in 1905 the Small Golden State Medal for the oil painting Portrait of Mrs. Satory ; In 1913 the Archduke Carl Ludwig Medal for the oil painting Portrait of the Imperial Councilor Gerstl and in 1936 the anniversary medal of the Cooperative of Visual Artists Vienna. He also created portraits of Stefan Zweig and Bertha von Suttner . During the First World War he was President of the Committee of Fine Artists in the service of "War Aid". Participated in the social life of the Künstlerhaus until the 1930s.

Rauchinger had converted from the Jewish to the Roman Catholic faith in 1895 , and he belonged to the Freemasons persecuted and murdered under National Socialism . On July 10, 1942, at the age of 84, he was arrested and deported. He died on August 19, 1942 in the Theresienstadt concentration camp . His last place of residence before the deportation was in Schmelzgasse in Vienna's 2nd district .

Commemoration

The exhibition "The Heart as Heavy as Lead" - Art and Resistance in the Theresienstadt Ghetto 2018 in the Folklore Museum Vienna commemorated a. a. to Heinrich Rauchinger.
